Taking a while to get to 5000

Yeah that would be my takeaway from this game. If you are holding your breath on Talbot you can probably exhale.

Big ol meh. When do we start dressing rosters to get into that winning groove? Hopefully soonish.
Thank goodness Talbot looks NHL competent.

In retrospect, yeah the Jets turn around and score shortly after. But that should have either been a Flames goal, or at least Flames offensive zone possession.

The final three games will likely be pretty close to the opening night roster, especially the two home games.

Team was in tough tonight with that Jets line up. Gotta give them credit as they still played hard tonight. Liked Mangiapane, Reider and Kylington tonight. Talbot gives up a classic early goal, but settled in nicely. Hopefully we see some big cuts soon because there’s a lot of players playing over their heads.

Liking Glenn Gawdin's game. You call him up and plug him on an energy line and he's not going to make a lot of mistakes. Keeps things simple. Skates well.

Okay, didn't read anything today, so here are my thoughts without any influence.
Top 3 players for the Flames tonight:
1. Andrew Mangiapane: high energy and aggressive, making good plays and reads all over the ice. If he had any linemates, he would have had a couple of points.
2. Cam Talbot: I don't see any goals that were directly his fault. Very strong on rebound control other than the first one which was scored because Brodie lost his man. Strange bounces on the rest of them.
3. Tobias Rieder: No finish whatosever, but he made great defensive and neutral zone plays, and really pushed the attack offensively. He's maybe no better than a 4th line forward, but he's a pretty good one. I still don't know if he sticks on the roster.
Honorable mention to Ruzicka for the goal and some nice shifts throughout the night.
Gawdin had some chances offensively, but struggled at times managing his own zone.
Players with bad nights:
Buddy Robinson: literally just a jumble of limbs. He tries, but he isn't NHL caliber.
Byron Froese: skating chaos. A nice moment now and then, but overall just a hot mess of incoordination.
TJ Brodie: mid-season form. Turnovers and missed coverage all over the place. I know that vets take it easy in pre-season, but tonight was a pretty poor night for a guy that has so much experience. Pick it up TJ.
Oliver Kylington: similar to Brodie, he should have stood out a little bit and had the ability to make a play or two. He was mostly invisible, with poor puck handling and coverage being the standout for his night. Pick it up Oliver.
Andrew MacDonald: Please cut him already. He missed a lot of assignments and was behind the play pretty regularly, and this wasn't even close to a full NHL lineup. The guy is done. Move on.
It's time to separate the chaff from the wheat. Perhaps one more game for anyone to make an impression, but I can count the guys battling for spots on less than one hand.

Two points he I differ on.
1. Mangipane. He was fine. Didn't do much better than anyone else. Didn't separate himself from the pack.
2. Kylington had a fantastic night. Rarely out of position, skated well, made a ton of plays. I think he had a tough time playing down to some of his team mates who were clearly a step behind in thought processes. He and Stone didn't have much chemistry.

The Flames always make cuts too late, and then lose the first game - usually against the Oilers or Canucks.
I just hope that they change things this year so that they actually win the first game for once.

The Flames could dress their entire NHL roster in every preseason game and would still find a way to lose their opener.

It'll be 10 consecutive if they lose to Colorado on Oct. 3.

Maybe, but it couldnt hurt to try something different for once rather then spend the first 7 games of preseason just trying to figure out which PTO gets a contract or who is going to be the 14th forward. Would like to see at least 12 cuts tomorrow.
