Did I miss a step? Why can't I boot off my USB HDD?

Have you changed the boot priority in your BIOS? You need to set the USB device to the highest and then it should work.

Did you deactivate the onboard in your bios? I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

There must be no MBR(Master boot record) on the drive. Look up in google 'fdisk /mbr' if you don't know how to create it.

mucked way through to get the new card as the primary ... seems to be working properly, or better anyway.

New issue ... thought I'd test it on an old EA Sports game I had and I got this "Your 3D accelerator and/or video card could not be initialized properly. Please update the driver for your 3D adn/or video card".

Drivers have been updated. Thoughts?

And is there a site that gives a list for optimal settings for a BenQ monitor? The new card has given us more options, but the text seems a litte more blurry than before.

Thanks guys ... always amazing help.

Bingo, when moving from onboard to AGP slots, I think as a rule you generaly want to disable the on board video before being able to properly use your new one, this means going into your BIOS and disabling it. I know when I moved from on board sound to a dedicated soundcard, I had to do this to clear up all issues. Pretty easy to do, when you fire up your computer, hit "delete" or someother such key to enter your BIOS (it will tell you when your puter starts up) once in your BIOS, look for on board periphials, look for the on board video and set it to "disabled". When windows finishes loading, make sure you install your drivers for the new vid cards. Should do the trick. I think what causes the problem is you could wind up with two primary display drivers and they could interfere with each other.

Also, with your new vid card, where did you get the drivers from? If it is the CD that came with the card, you may want to check the manufacturers website to see if there is a newer driver. I usualy chuck the CD out the comes with pretty much any hardware and d/l the latest ones from the companies website.

only the new card shows up ... the onboard has been disabled.

I think I fixed the fuzzy text issue too.

Now I'm just down to the game side and that 3D card (video card) not initialized properly.

"Your 3D accelerator and/or video card could not be initialized properly. Please update the driver for your 3D adn/or video card".

You may want to run "dxdiag" and see what it says.

You went into your BIOS to disable it? I only ask to make sure.

The error message your getting is pretty generic, it may have nothing to do with your drivers. So in your hardware profile, is there a yellow "!" beside your display adapter?

Went in ...

In the Display section at the bottom it said this "Direct 3D functionality not available. You should verifty that the driver is a final version from the harware manufacturer"

I installed the driver set twice, then downloaded and did again from the ATI website.

I'm running DirectX 9.0

Above the functionality warning it says ...

Direct3D Accelaration: Not Available
AGP Texture Accerlation: Not Available

Card model is a ATI Diamond Stealth S60 w/ RADEON 7000 64mb

OK ... I'm really buggered now.

First off the BIOS

No mention at all of a onboard monitor or video card in the peripherals section. Odd.

When I put the monitor plug into the onboard I get OUT OF RANGE, when I put it in the new card I get SIGNAL CABLE NOT CONNECTED.

I'm in at safe mode now and really messed up so any help would be great. In fact I think the reason the 3D card wasn't working earlier was because I was in at a greater form of safe mode then.

So how do I get my onboard back or get my new one set up? (realize this may be beyond the old internet help now and into taking it in)

Peripheral Section of BIOS

IDE DMA Transfer Access - Enabled
On Chip IDE CHannel0 - Enabled
On Chip IDE Channel1 - Enabled
On Chip Serial ATA - Enabled
AC97 Audio - Disabled (though I just enabled it to get a change to create a Safe Mode Entry)
USB 1.1 Controller - Enabled
USB 2.0 Controller - Enabled
USB Keyboard Support - Disabled
USB Mouse Support - Disabled
Onboard H/W LAN - Enabled
Onboard LAN Boot Rom - Disabled
Onboard FDC Controller - Enabled
Onboard Serial Port 1 - 3F8IRQ4
Onboard Serial Port 2 - 2F8IRQ3
UART Mode Select - Normal
Onboard Parallel Port - 378IRQ7
Parallel Port Mode - SPP
Game Port Address - Disabled
Midi Port Address - Disabled

two were shaded out and couldn't be changed

UR2 Duplex Mode - HALF
Midi Port IRQ - 10

any thoughts? Any way to get my onboard back and just return the new video card or get the new vid card working?

What a freaking mess.

It sounds like you are having serious driver conflicts.

Try to remove the ATI Drivers.
Then see if there is anything you can do to remove the original drivers (what is your onboard video? Nvidia? Intel?)

You can usually find something like ATI Cleaner for most viedo cards that pull out all remenants of previous drivers. Once they are cleaned out ther install a the drivers fresh.

Which drivers did you install the ones from the disk or the ones recommended from the ATI website? The ones recommended by the website are wrong since ATI has dropped support for it's pre-DirectX 9 cards including your Radeon 7000. Try removing your old ATI drivers and control panel and install the Catalyst 6.5 series (the last to support the Radeon 7000).

Ok, hopefully this is an easy one. My company runs a dos based program (i know, I know) and sometimes it works on xp and some times it does not. When it does not, we need to do a fresh re-load of xp and then it works. Once it is working it works fine and only really effect us when we get new computers.

We recently purchased a very simple laptop the runs xp media edition (other versions of xp are xp professional) and this progarm does not work on the laptop.

So my question is, is there a way to get DOS programs running on an xp machine without having to do a fresh install. Is xp media edition that much different than xp professional. I do not want to do a fresh install on the laptop but if I have too I will. I am hoping the smart minds on CP have an easier solution.

Have you tried Microsoft Virtual PC?

OK ...

update:

I have the PC up and running again ... I stripped away all the new drivers in SAFE MODE, and then reinstalled the driver set from the software that came with it.

Looks good, no fuzziness but still two problems remain.

1. When I move down a web site or email the monitor loads in a wave. Can't be right. Icons etc show up on the desktop in a wave as well.
2. 3D card functionality still not available.

So is that still a problem with remnant drivers? Someone mentioned the ATI Driver Clean? Is that the way to go?

Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

just looked through my Add/Remove Programs ...

S3 3Display
S3 3Overlay

Are those conflicting with the new video card?

VIA Platform Device Manager ... chipset driver correct?

Frustrating

Those S3 items would be high on my list of things to clean off. I'd probably remove those AND you video drivers, reboot, then install my video drivers again.

If that didn't work, I'd google something like "S3 driver removal" and find a program that will help remove the leftovers.

(and yes, the VIA Platform Device Manager is is the chipset drivers plus other MOBO devices - don't remove it)

Not having much luck.

The Clean Driver 3.0 has a S3 Savage clean tool ... it removed one file, but not the three instances in the Add/Remove Program section.

And they won't go away when I hit remove in the Add/Remove Program section.
