My favourite Jagr quote about some players getting to the wrong place fast, whereas he just goes to the right place does sort of apply to a guy like Tkachuk.
I think it has to do a lot with willingness to go to the tough areas (front of the net, we have all seen him parked there), plus some really good hand eye (and we all know he works hard on his tips regularly in practice), and also a high level of compete.
I just don’t necessarily understand how you can look at him and Rantanen and make an assertion that Matty has better vision and anticipation. Rantanen probably outscores Tkachuk for a reason...
|
Yeah. That reason's name is Nathan MacKinnon.

.. and, if Sakic is successful with his valuation of Rantanen at 8.4-8.75 over a 6-8 year term, that bodes well for BT.
No way BT bites on 8.5 for MT if Rantanen is unsigned

No question.

Sure, but the situation I was addressing specifically was the event in which the Flames were so negatively affected by Tkachuk's absence on 15 December that they would be forced into offering a lot more than they want to in order to sign him at that juncture. In the first place, I don't foresee this as an especially plausible situation. The Flames are a good team even without Matthew Tkachuk in the lineup. In the second place, because of how the cap-hit is pro-rated for contracts signed mid-season, the Flames will not have the cap room necessary to offer Tkachuk any more than he hopes to sign for today. So, if the Flames find themselves in the unlikely position of desperation to sign Tkachuk in mid-December, chances seem pretty high that he will end up missing the entire season.

I see mid-December being mentioned. Is Dec 1st not the cut off for signing a contract for the 19/20 season?

If he misses games, I may be on the ‘offer him 1 yr at 4 mill (pro rate to 6) and maybe play him on PP2, see how that works out for him and his agent’ bandwagon.

I see MT sitting for the year if he does not sign by the end of the month.
I really think that the Flames need to hold their ground, as IMO, MT is not worth over 7 mil per year on any length of contract.
And IMO, no trade, let him sit.

I doubt you need to worry about playing him on PP2 when he’s sitting in the stands.
If anyone thinks Tkachuk will simply cave if the season starts without him, I would think again.

How can people even say things like this?
The market is well established. He is getting over $7 and fair market is in the $8’s on anything over a 5 year term.

People take this stuff way too personally. One of the things I love about Brad Treliving is that he doesn't—he won't. He will make a calculated business decision.

Six years? Yes. On five years? I don't think the market is established enough at all to conclude that a five-year deal is worth +$8.0 m.

You dont think he could claim he is worth 3M a year less than Matthews?

No trade but let him sit if it means we get a fair deal.
