7 or the 8 year unicorn deal would be amazing.

How could it not be a bridge deal at this point? The Flames don’t have the cap space for a long term contract, and if they can somehow offload Frolik (which may or may not be possible at his full cap hit) then they leave a huge hole at RW after Lindholm.

I’m going to assume it’s a 1 or 2 year deal being talked about, somewhere close to the Gio cap.

If I was to guess, the terms they weren't discussing before (at least not seriously) were 1, 4 and 8 years.

I would guess 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8.

I would hope they aren’t discussing a four year deal. That would take him to ufa.

Basically 20 mil over 3 years but broken down to 5.5, 5.5, 9. Meaning flames have to qualify him after year three at right around 8 mil.
This is among the worst case scenarios for the Flames

If he is paid $9.0 m in the final year of his deal, then Tkachuk needs to be qualified @ $9.0 m, not $8.0 m

I would expect that four- and eight-year deals are the only ones that are off the table.

The best way to keep the AAV down is probably to give him exactly what he wants for term.

If you think your window is the next 3 years, you give Tkachuk 4 years to bring him to UFA status and move him after year 3.

No trade restrictions, player gets what he wants most (free agency), Flames get a low cap number during their window to win it all.

I doubt there is any way a 4 year deal is on the table...a non-starter.

I don't think it's at all likely either, but that's probably what it would take to significantly lower the AAV

Yeah if the Flames give here, it may have to be on term. It’s far from ideal, but a lower AAV certainly helps them. Just look at the numbers.

Don’t most teams run with 7 defensemen and 14 forwards? Flames have historically done that, or 8 and 13. There are a lot of day to day’s in the NHL, not to mention giving your coach some flexibility at the bottom of the roster.

6 year term and under 8 is what I see.

He scored a lot of points but so did the entire league last season. Didn’t break the top 30 for points. Draisaitl was top 10 in scoring when he signed his deal, and centers make more.

Aho with 5*8.5 sets the ceiling. He isn’t getting the same money with a walk right to UFA. Less money and more term is my guess

Agreed, although at least Flames aren’t dealing with new coach or integrating a bunch of new faces.

Yeah he's not in the same zone as Point or Marner in my opinion. And Aho is very comparable and should be the high bar for sure.

If you look at 5v5 primary point production the last two seasons, and then normalize the ice time, his closet recent RFA comparables are actually Nylander, Connor, and Boeser. He's not in Point, Marner, etc area code as a point producer at 5v5 yet.

Point: Goals/60-1.04, Primary Points/60-2.08
Marner: G/60-0.78, PP/60-2.03
Draisaitl: G/60-0.98, PP/60-1.94 (Context - signed to 8 year, $8.5M)
Stone: G/60-1.05, PP/60-1.93 (Context - signed 8 year , $9.5M UFA contract)
Aho: G/60-0.83, PP/60-1.71 (5 year, $8.5M offer sheet)
Karlsson: G/60-1.08, PP/60-1.61 (8 years, $5.9M)
Connor: G/60-0.97, PP/60-1.59
Boeser: G/60-1.1, PP/60-1.58
Nylander: G/60-0.59, PP/60-1.57 (6 years, $6.9M)
Tkachuk: G/60-0.9, PP/60-1.56
Laine: G/60-1.0, PP/60-1.48
Rantanen: G/60-0.65, PP/60-1.40

IMO a 6 year, $8M contract would be fair for player and team under the current RFA climate and that is what is listed as the most selected option on this thread poll too.

If we're out shelling 8+ I'd want at least 7 years.

It sounds like the Tkachuk camp has been pushing for a 5 year term and I assume the Flames are in the 6-8 range. If they are talking new terms I feel like a 2 year deal makes a lot of sense.
