Yup he really is great.

Klopp too considering he has probably spent half of what City has spent and Liverpool are right on the same level as them.

But you still have all the idiots that don't look at the strength of the squads he's always had saying...

But they have no trophies. They've spent less and had moderate table success but have won nothing.

while I agree with the general sentiment, I will acknowledge that Pep at least knows how to spend the money correctly. I mean, look at Man United (and PSG to a degree). Money alone doesn't win you anything, you need to have a plan and use it wisely ... and Pep has done that.

I seriously doubt Sterling is looking like a world beater if he spent the last three years under Brendan Rodgers. Pep is a great manager. Best ever? Kinda tough to measure if you have to throw spending out because every great manager seems to be one who ends up at a club that can spend a lot.

It's the combination that kills. Money without Pep would not work as well with any other manager, but Pep without money would never work either. He could never build a team the traditional way, he needs quality and he needs it quickly. He's never going to spend 5 years at the same club, so he'd never take a job like Klopp has for example.

With Man City it's been excessive to say the least. They have a really good academy too which makes the spending even more over the top. Imagine being able to pay £60 million for Mahrez to be a super sub.

and imagine driving a top talent like Sancho out because of it. It really sucks that Foden didn't leave, he could have become the answer to Englands midfield problems quickly if he had gone the same route.

Which I think just goes to show that you can't win if you're not spending like the Manchester clubs, Chelsea, etc. Leicester being the only anomaly in recent years.

I just don't get all the hype he gets. A lot of people reference him like he's leading some underspending team to great success.

They finished second once. They've won no trophies under him. I feel like I'm living in crazy town watching the adulation. He's a fine coach but really he's just flirting with the top of the table and going home alone. I get it's mostly Levy, but still.

I think it's pretty simple though. They can't buy all the best players and yet for the past few years have been in the mix for the league, runners up in the CL, had decent runs in the cups and have overall been more consistent than at least a couple of the spenders. That's a pretty solid record for Poch? It makes people think that if he was given the budget of United/Liverpool/City he'd walk the league.

I'm not saying that is the case, and I don't think it's necessarily true. It reminds me of Cujo in the NHL when he was stopping shots a night and I thought "if he could get on a good team, he'd have shutouts every night!" Sports doesn't work that way though. I think that a similar thing will happen with Poch when he eventually goes to Madrid. Although, I do hope he does well!

The only year they were "in the mix" for the league was when they finished third in a two horse race lol.

Yeah, that's a strange definition of "in the mix".

They did also make the Champions' League final.

That they did, where they put forth a lifeless performance with the questionable decision to start Kane over Moura despite Moura being in form and Kane returning from injury. I'm not saying Poch is awful, but at some point you gotta do more than get close.

They're a less successful version of the early 2000's Oakland Athletics.

it depends on how you view Tottenham. If you think they belong in the top 4 by default, then I guess Pochs tenure has been a disappointment. If you, like me, think they don't, then yeah, he deserves a ton of credit. People will always question the lack of trophies there but I think overall he's done an outstanding job.

I think that's the thing. He's raised the expectations so now people do view them as a top-4 team by default. I remember vividly before Poch how top 4 was always the dream but never expected.
