Default Clogged sink

So my kitchen sink is having some draining issues. Some water will get through whatever is causing the problem.

I’ve tried plunging and drano.

Any other DIY before I hit the telephone and bring someone in.

Anybody got a contact for a plumber?

TIA

Home Depot should rent out plumbing snakes. You could also pull the trap and see if that’s where the clog is or if it’s further down

It’s well beyond the trap. Don’t think I have the time to try and snake myself unfortunately

i am assuming that you ahve tried a plunger?

To me drano, plunger and snake are the easy do it yourself starting points

I’d for sure try the snake but I have two small children to wrestle with at home here as well.

Get a bunch of dish soap in there, let it sit, then use plunger.

Works on plugged toilets too.

Pour a couple of litres of boiling water down the drain with some dish soap. If it is soap scum, or coagulated fat it will help dissolve it. It worked for me last November.

Ya, I'd try filling a sink with as hot of water as possible, and then opening the drain and see if that help get things going since some water is getting through. Bonus points if you have a garburator as turning that on can act like a pump and help push things through.

If you do call a plumber. Please please please let them know you've tried Drano - They'll have to adjust their safety measures accordingly.

I’ll try the dish soap idea. I’ve gone through the boiling water process a bunch already. Basically the lines will fill and I’ll stop adding water when it gets to back to sink level. It will then slowly drain.

How much soap is a “bunch”?

Try the vinegar and baking soda suggestion too. It always works for me and it's pretty fun.

When I did it, we repeated the process of dumping a bunch of dish soap followed by a pot of boiling water 4 or 5 times before it started draining noticeably more quickly. That said, we had a strong suspicion that fat was the issue.

How do you know it's "well past the trap"?

90% of the time, if no other fixtures are draining slowly, its the trap.

It should be removable, and its the first thing I'd try.

Had a similar issue with my kitchen sink. Went down into the basement and found the clean out, rented one of them 100 ft. power snake units and ran that down to the main line. Solved the issue.

Could try standing in the sink too. But only if it's an under mount.

Mine was similar last year. I ended up having to open the cleanout in the basement(watch out for water in the pipe!) and snake 25 feet. Old cast iron pipes lithified with stuff, I spent a few hours just reaming it. Fortunately it was the dedicated sink line and the clog was before the wye, so only gross kitchen stuff.

Fun with old houses! So ya, if your kids are going to keep you busy, might be better to pay for this one. I never use draino as I almost always end up having to open something up at some point, and don't want to have to deal with that stuff. I tired all the above, hot water and dish soap, vinegar and baking soda etc. But the clog was solid. Probably still need a pro to use one of those powered spinner things one day...

The p trap is directly under the sink. The lines will take a few liters of water before it backs up to the sink.
