I can't see Treliving doing anything but a 2 or 3 bridge or a 6 to 8 long term deal for chucky, his dna wont allow him to give into a stupid term

Then Treliving needs to be prepared for Tkachuk to miss some of the season, perhaps.

But as long as a short term deal (2-3 years) is the same dollars as the longer terms offered, I imagine Tkachuk would go for it.

It's all about being paid top dollar now, and keeping the UFA flexibility to ensure maximum dollars down the road.

But if he signs, say a 3-years deal, he'll only want 2-years on his next one. it's just postponing the issue.

If that's the case after 3 years then trade him, Treliving, the team and the fans don't want a player who doesn't want to be here.

A three-year contract gives him the ability to file for arbitration, receive a one-year (likely high) contract and become a UFA as early as possible.

Treliving is pretty much limited to 1, 2 or 6 through 8 years contract. 5 might be on the table if the dollar value is good enough and it's the difference between having him at training camp or not, but 3 and 4 shouldn't even be entertained in my opinion.

Players wanting to get to UFA as soon as possible is likely more about maximizing their salary, not necessarily about bailing.

Of course, the threat of bailing is what gives them maximum dollars.

I've seen nothing concrete that says that Tkachuk doesn't want to be here. It's all speculation that he might want to leave.

But I think it's very clear that Tkachuk, and the other premium RFA's, want maximum dollar not without giving up UFA years.

1993/94. Ray Sheppard was a terrible skater.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis
First bad sign in the Matthew Tkachuk contract situation - he is not in town to join his teammates in the Flames golf tourney tomorrow. Not unexpected given his situation as an RFA, but his absence makes the standstill feel real.

It's just business. How can I make the most money? It has absolutely nothing to do with where Tkachuk wants to play. UFA is where players cash in, so it would make sense (if you want to bet on yourself) to sign a contract that takes you right up to UFA. The difference now is that these first contracts are much higher than they were previously, and that is because of a few factors. The salary cap; GMs are less likely to sign 'older' players to long term contracts for past performance a la Jonathan Toews or Seabrook. In response, players now realize they need to be paid for value that they are currently offering and are likely to be worth during their young/prime years, because they can't risk signing a lower first contract only to have GMs shy away from a long term deal for an older player on their second contract because they are under a cap crunch.

Francis is such a drama queen. The Cuban Missile Crisis, this ain't.

They have to have the cap space to show him said money.

In fairness, there were lots of 50 goal men that year. Hull was the same year, and wasn't fast. Andreychuk too.

More recently though, I don't think Tkachuk is on a vastly different skating level than Iggy, who scored 50 three times. I kinda forget Leclair's skating.

Why detract from the tournament with reporters trying to bug you about the contract? Better to stay clear.

He said 30 years. That was his mistake. 30 years ago the game was much different.

I also think the UFA as early as possible, or a year after like Matthews did, allows for 2 big UFA contracts for these type of RFAs who start right after being drafted:

ELC - 3 years, brings them to 21
RFA contract - 4-5 years, brings them to UFA mid 20s
1st UFA contract - 5-7 years, big payday, all 'prime' years, no devaulation, brings them to early 30s.
2nd UFA contract - Still possibility for the elite players to cash in long-term as teams will still throw crazy money at good young-30 year olds (although goalie see Bobrovosky, or Wheeler's extension a year ago despite being 33 by the time it took effect, or Couture's who goes until he's 38)

So not surprising that they are fighting for it. Matthews got it, Aho was similar.

But if you miss out on the 2nd UFA contract when you're 31, 32 maybe 33, then you get into Pavelski territory where your team doesn't want to sign you long-term and you're viewed as a risk so you're "only" getting 7M for a couple years. Had his most recent expired contract ended when he was 32 Pavelski is probably signing a 10x7 as a "40 goal scorer"

The reporters will instead just bug the other players about Tkachuk's absence.

Reporter: "Well uh jeez, *insert Calgary Flames player*, what do you think of Matthew's contract situation?"

Calgary Flames player: Chucky is a big part of our team, and I'm sure he'll be here. We support him and the team, and he's a real big part of our team here - and I'm sure it'll get done and Chucky will be back here, because he's a real big part of our team here.

The relationship between media and player in Canadian markets is such a joke. The questions asked are generally awful, and the answers given are usually even worse. Hopefully this improves as the NHL continues to try and market the personalities in the game better.

True. But Iggy scored in both the dead puck and post lockout era. And, like I said, Iggy wasn't known for skating.

Draisaitl can skate OK (better than when drafted) but I don't think his 50 came from skating.

Yes it did. Connor's skating though.

I still can't believe that horrible Matthews contract. Top dollar and walks him right to UFA.

And then Toronto fans trying to defend it? Gold. (but bad for everyone else)
