Townsend is a qualifier. Bianca is putting her in her place.
I dont know how Halep couldn't solve her.

The variety is kind of the icing on the cake for her. The main thing is that there is really no benefit to going after her backhand or her forehand. They're both just... heavy.
Serving this badly and having a shot at bageling her opponent says a lot about what else she has in her game, but also a lot about her opponent. Against a real, top ten player, this just isn't going to cut it. EDIT: There it is. She seems to have less trouble breaking than holding, at this point. Super weird.

That was a FAA service game from Bianca.

Shes overcompensating for Townsend's chip and charge return. She'll work that out.

She should just slice the damn thing in. Who cares if it comes back. Just pass her. It's working on the return. Just turn your service games into return games. I mean who the heck would YOU bet on winning the average rally?

She is 7-0 vs top 10 players this year. Her second serve seems to be only weakness.

I'm well aware, but her first serve was inconsistent in that first set as well. I'm judging her on what I perceive her to be based on her tennis so far this year - arguably the best women's tennis player on Earth, minus one or two attributes.
If she can consistently serve well - not "I'm getting consistent free points off my serve" well, but "I can get my first serve in regularly and put myself in a good starting position" well - I can't think there's anyone on tour who should be expected to beat her.
The problem just seems to be focus sometimes. Like, dumping that ball into the net there. That shouldn't ever happen for a world class player. For a 19 year old? Sure.

Townsend is impressing me with her court coverage, she's making Bianca hit a lot of extra shots.

Which is fun because Bianca seems only too happy to oblige her by obliterating those extra shots.
Big service game here. An easy hold at love or 15 would go a long way to settling things down. Three chances to get the break back, but not if you have to scramble just to hold.

Looks like this could've been pretty easy, but looks like it's gonna end up being a 3-setter.

It's only one break.
EDIT: See?

Maybe someone with more competitive tennis insight can answer this for me, but how much do competitors watch tapes of their opponents? You’d have to think they study their opponents like they do in boxing and MMA, but they don’t have nearly as much time with a tournament setting like this
