I think that typically most men make the biggest mistakes when they try to branch out and be themselves. Often that just looks ridiculous. Best to find something that works for you and stick with it.

You have to correlate it to the personal income thread to better understand the decisions.

Exactly this.
Just be yourself, but if you want to dress better, you can start with being mindful of what you wear. Biggest things in my mind is nailing colours, textures and fit. By that I mean, wear whatever makes you comfortable. Make sure the colours you have on work well together and make sure everything fits right. Try to stick to natural fabrics as much as possible (pure wool, cotton, linen, leather, etc.). Stay away from synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon, anything with a "TM" in the name). You might find the most incredible lime green shirt on sale that is a perfect fit, but if you don't have pants and shoes that go well with it, it's best to put it back and pick up the white or grey shirt at regular price.

Oh yeah, buying whatever is on sale is a big issue. I struggle with it myself. Like oh that Gitman Vintage shirt is 40% off, but do I need a mint green oxford?

I wear thick wool socks and birkenstocks with fatigues and a grey sweatshirt all the time during the winter here in Vancouver.

After reading some of this thread I'm starting to think I should look somewhere other than Costco for my work clothes. I do usually dress better than my boss though.

My go to is Banana Republic for pants, but very specifically the Monogram label. Which more or less has been killed off, so I get the pants that are usually around $300 regular price on sale around $170.
Next I get my dress shirts from Uniqlo. They are $30 each. They look fantastic new and last about a 18-24 months until they start to look worn. I donate at that point.
Last I wonder into Saks, Holt or Nordstrom time to time. I luck out and find high end shoes for dirt cheap on clearance. Just scored Ferragamo loafers for $300 CDN.
There you go. You are now all set to walk the M-F line of “looks like he cares what he wears” but not “look at that walking d bag, is he in sales or legal?”

Or that snot colored shirt made of silk that's so damn cheap (<$50). Ugly as sin and an obvious fashion faux pas... could I justify buying it as lounge clothing?
Wife answer: I do not disagree it feels amazing, but no matter how comfy it feels, you should be embarrassed every time you put it on. This shirt might work for someone else, but definitely not you.
I agree with _Q_, better off to pay closer to full price for something that agrees with your wardrobe and you can wear it regularly rather than buying something on clearance that you shouldn't be wearing ever.
Different direction (Caridgans):
My wife loves the cardigan/academic long sleeve look (which I agree with), but we can never seem to find me anything that looks right. Either it's too baggy or the buttons look like they're about to burst. My wife did comment that I look good in formal and athletic, but I look kinda weird/awful in many types of offerings in between. Similar in nature to everything in Levi's being horrible for me other than the 541 being great, is there some style category similar to something like an athletic cardigan? most style articles about cardigans are useless as hell.
I've tried all sort of selection from Saks, Nordstrom, Club Monaco, Boss, Zara, J Crew, Banana, Simon's, The Bay etc. and nothing that's a reasonable balance between look and price. We did find one once at Simon's that looked really good for $50, but we can't seem to replicate that look even if we toyed with cardigans that were $200+ and nothing else at Simon's looks reasonably close. Since the cardigan is a little bit of a broad category, it's kinda crazy IMO we've only found one thing in the last 7 to 8 years that looks good on me. But reading this thread is making me wonder if there might be some specific style like a golf cardigans or something that fits my body shape how I want it to fit and I generally never go into the golf stores to look at brands (ie: Jay Lindenberg?).
Possibly all the other cardigans I've ever tried are essentially the equivalent fits of classic, boot cut and skinny for jeans, which would be possibly why everything I've ever tried on cardigan wise essentially didn't work? It's one of the rare things I think I'd be willing to spend a bit more on and if I find a category that is exactly what I want, I think I'd be retiring a ton of long sleeves and fall jackets from my wardrobe in a hurry.
Does my logic make sense? Or am I just going to have to manually look for a cardigan that looks good?

No offence to you fashion people, but I'm getting a kick out of how little I care about all the stuff you're talking about. I can't believe I just read this thread. My GAF level is probably between zero and one, with guys like p12 and DoubleF up near 10.
I wear jeans, Vans, and a tshirt + hoodie if cold. I don't even own a suit. I seriously cannot imagine spending more than two minutes giving a flying F about whether my pants match my shirt. There is no "match". These are the pants, that's the shirt. Here's what I'm wearing.
But super secret tip for all you guys that are closer to my scale than to p12, black hightop Vans go with everything. I've literally worn the same shoes (when not on a construction site) for three years. And I'm including weddings and xmas parties in that.

Dude, sorry, but I don’t consider hitops to be suitable for a wedding.

Well, have fun with your expensive, uncomfortable shoes. I pull my pant legs over top, and nobody notices. And if someone does notice, they don't say anything. They look on in envy, wishing they were wearing Vans instead of stupid expensive shoes that aren't nearly as comfortable.
You'd be surprised at how well straight black Vans clean up. Sometimes I spray them when I'm at the car wash.

I’m not opposing you doing you.
But my dress shoes are really comfortable, and cost a lot less than a pair of Vans.

Good sir, I simply do not believe that there is a more comfortable shoe than Vans.

I do the same with some Air Jordan 1s - the original Chicago colorway. Red and white is a bit bold, but like black Chucks, they go with any long pants because of the classic nature of them. The last time I wore dress shoes was at a funeral five years ago, including my last two job interviews.

This is not the thread for me
