I want to be his heir apparent, but before that I need to....?
And no, I don't want to be a Lewinsky. Where is she now? Nowhere.

Junior Minister?
Undersecretary?
Article/articling?
Probably none of those.
MPs don't have heir apparents (heirs apparent?) so that's kind of confusing.

I think perhaps I need to sleep on it... In the meantime, I'm getting together a 'save the dark jersey' campaign if anyone wants to send feedback...

Why are you looking for this terminology so badly? If you're actually applying for the position, I wouldn't get hung up on the wording. Besides, I don't believe there is any sort of dedicated entry-level position with an MP's office which will necessarily train you in that capacity. If you truly want to become an MP and are lacking requisite experience, then working for their office in any form will be valuable. You've gotta start somewhere, and I don't think an assistant/page/clerk position is the worst place to begin. Best of luck.

Subordinate, pupil or scholar could all fit.
PS.........Lewinsky would have been my "fotze" answer.
