RFA Battle ... help me out?
So looking at the impact of RFAs signing late I went and built a quick table on all the big names, their teams cap situation and then used that to solve how many days late these players could be before the teams ran into big trouble.
So loads of assumptions that I'd appreciate a debate on ... help me refine the contract terms, add in nuances by team if anyone is aware of them and come up with a table.
I think both sides are literally screwed in this situation for most player / team combos if things drag on too long.
I have Toronto at October 16th as a deadline for example, Tampa at October 13th.
The Flames don't have room to start.
So beat this up for me before I write a flawed story. Thanks!

TheIronMaiden just absolutely boomed me.
Bingo, what does the 'Late' represent on this table? You're suggesting that will be the time in days from the start of the season on which they will sign?

Yeah basically looking at the impact to these RFAs for not signing on time. The Jackets and Avalanche months, but the rest of the team have two weeks or less before there are serious consequences.
A) having to move players
B) further stalemate as nearly negotiated deal has to get torn up

Great stuff, Bingo. This is a huge issue that hasn't really been explored yet.
I assume that the number of days is being calculated, based on the guesstimated salary that you have presented?
So basically there are 2 guys on the list for whom the team can reasonably absorb an extended holdout? That is interesting. I suspect there is going to be some feverish negotiating (and signing) during the pre-season.
And to those that will suggest thsat this gives leverage to the players, I disagree. It remains a double-edged sword because, if they start to approach the doomsday date, one of two things will have to happen: either the player takes a shorter-term, lower contract to make the cap work, or the player would be forced to sit out the entire season.
Either way, it is not good for either the player, or the team.

Is the determination for Philly that BOTH Konecny and Provorov can hold out 7 days, or is it either one can hold out that long?

Exactly on all fronts.
I solved the days to fit with the salary I gave every player and the cap situation of each team.
It is a two way street. The team has less room each day, but so too do all the teams, and not many have the cap space to absorb an elevated first year, the ones that do aren't the teams these players would want an offer sheet from.
It's effectively driving all of these guys save two into rosters by the first week of the season.

Yes for Philly, Boston, Winnipeg and to a way lesser extent Calgary, and that's why I included Mangiapane.
The rest of the teams only have that one player to sign.

With respect to your request, the numbers appear to be exactly what you are trying to present. So I think you are good to go for your article, from that perspective.
And GREAT idea for an article - this is such a key issue that I think a lot of people aren't yet aware of, simply because we haven't really seen it play out yet. We sort of did with Nylander, but the Leafs still had room at the time.
Now we have multiple teams that don't have room. This #### is about to become real.

If anyone else is extremely confused by this thread, there's a spreadsheet image in the OP that you might be unable to see.
My employer seems to have blocked it for some reason (I think CalgaryPuck, the website and not the forums, is blocked by them too)
