This thread is amazing. Apparently I am breaking all the rules wearing shorts and Birkenstock's to work. In my defence I live in a tropical climate and work in a refinery (put PPE on when I get there).

Every pair of jeans I’ve ever owned has been retired due to this. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong either.

Me too.

I believe it's from constant stress in the area... Those of you who naturally have more, um, space in that area can't possibly understand what we crotch busters deal with... Damn you and your spacious crotches...

It’s usually a fit issue, but it’s incredibly common. That was the #1 repair when I worked at a jean shop.

If your jeans are too tight or sit too low, you end up putting extra pressure on the crotch/seat. This is made worse if you’re active in them (do a ton of walking or cycling) and don’t wash them regularly.

what do you think about those people that say you should never wash your jeans? I'm read more than a few articles where it's suggested to never do so and just freeze them once in awhile.

I think some guy running one of the jean companies said he hasn't' washed his in 10 years.

I'd never do it, myself.

Mentioned earlier, but the sole purpose of not washing your jeans (dry denim) is to achieve a certain look. Otherwise all you’re doing is decreasing the life of your jeans and increasing your rate of repair.

I’m 100% pro-wash, but you can over wash them. Every 2-3 months is probably fine. Every month if you wear them every day? Hard to say exactly, but yes, wash your jeans.

I don't really wear raw denim anymore, but I do wear single rinse jeans. I've mainly gotten into just wearing Japanese denim modelled after old Levi fits from the 50's and 60's so there's a new layer of snobbiness to this conversation.

I had a pair of samurais that were a perfect fit and wear. I tried to keep them alive as long as possible with crotch repairs. After 2-3 repairs, there was no hope

I just buy straighter fits now. Gone are the days of slim or skinny jeans.

Quick update: Shorts and socks came in. Shorts are astonishingly stiff. Like, I tried them on, and kept checking to see if there was still cardboard stuck in them somewhere. Washed them on cold/cold, but haven't tried them on again to see if they're any softer.

Socks were a fail. Well somewhat. They're low, but lot now enough (as was suspected), but they're still pretty comfy so will definitely be worn around the house now. I've ordered new socks now that are really low ones.

Shoes haven't arrived yet.

Try Amazon Essentials or Goodthread (by Amazon) brand shorts. They have a million different styles and cuts and colours.

And they are cheap too

I'm curious of two things.

1. Is it starch? Verifying if it's softer after the wash will give an idea.
2. Dryer balls. Would running your dryer on air fluff or air dry with dryer balls help pound that sucker into submission? (ie: accelerate break in of the pants)
