Macdonald can at least skate, Phaneuf can only skate in straight lines, I doubt there's a regular Dman in the league who got beat more one-on-one than Phaneuf the last couple of years, he's literally a human pylon waiving a stick these days

He played 3 seasons with Brandon Manning in Philadelphia.

Edit- which means nothing lol. I mixed up Manning with Brandon Davidson.

Very lukewarm on this subject. At worst he doesn’t work out and we don’t sign him, at best, maybe he out plays Davidson and is used as a warm body just in case Kylington hits the proverbial brick wall.

Also, dont think the Flames can win a cup without a McDonald on the roster.

icon57 Andrew MacDonald PTO

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington/MacDonald - Hamonic

Good bottom pairing option, and injuries are bound to happen.

He plays both sides too
No. MacDonald is pretty bad and a gross turnover machine. He's not that a good deal even on a league minimum contract. I mean, he's not Niklas Grossmann or Brandon Manning for example bad but he is still quite bad compared to the average defenceman in the NHL.

But as long as he's only here on a PTO and nothing more comes of that, then whatever.

He either plays better than Kylington/Davidson/Valiev in camp and nabs a 750k contract or goes and signs in another league. What's to lose.

I hope we PTO a whole bunch of guys. The more competition the better. I don't really care if they didn't live up to a 5 or 6 million dollar contract previously. This is a depth audition, different ball game entirely.

More bodies the better. Keep camp interesting. Just don’t sign them to anything over 1 year and under a mil (if earned a spot) and I’m happy.

Using that criteria, Andersson, Kylington, and Mangiapane all qualify because they played more than 30 games last season. Dube and Valimaki just missed the 30 game cutoff.

Almost every player on the Flames' NHL roster will qualify as veterans under this rule.

Froese and Davidson also qualify under the 100 games played threshold. Assuming NHL playoff games count toward the 100 game count, Quine also qualifies.

Pelletier qualifies as a 2019 first rounder.

Without any PTOs, the Flames should have no problem meeting the 8 veteran requirement for any preseason game, even the split-squad.

I'm really not all against it. We lost a lot of depth this summer

Not so sure this is right. BUt even so, they need to have warm bodies for preseason game, especially split-squad. Typically the Flames give a bunch of rest to vets (thinking Gio, Hamonic, Backlund, Ryan, etc) and guys nursing minor hurts, so it doesn't hurt to be able to have PTO guys to step in.

I also don't think you keep young guys who aren't making the team for this purpose (like Pelletier or Quine). Those guys get sent down to start AHL camp.

I don't think it's a huge issue even if he gets past the front door...last year this team had 9 d-men that could be regulars out of camp, either guys with NHL experience or top end prospects.

Giordano
Brodie
Hanifin
Hamonic
Stone
Andersson
Valimaki (inj)
Kylington
Prout

Two of those players are gone, and a third is likely injured for the year.

They need some bodies to fill those spots and Davidson is the only proven guy for it right now, and you have Valiev & Yelesin as question marks with little to no NHL experience.

And MacDonald isn't as bad as people think. He's fine in a 6/7 role with limited minutes. He just had a horrible contract in Philly.

With the cap crunch this team needs to be able to create some depth with cheap 2 way contracts for guys that have NHL experience, and MacDonald fits that bill.

Not compliance per se, but you do need at least 12 defenceman for a split squad game. Flames currently have 6 on the roster not counting Valimaki. In the minors they have 3 guys who may or may not be around by the time those games come up. Plus guys like Gio don't need to be playing much preseason time.

The Flames also have all of their AHL contracts and potential ATOs do they not?

For the first time in his Flyers career MacDonald had positive shot impacts, both weighted and unweighted, relative to the rest of the team. And it wasn’t because he started less of his shifts in the defense zone than he had in previous years, it was more due to the fact that when he played — which wasn’t much — he was given easier match-ups than he had been used to seeing.
IMO, at 33 years old this guy can expect to be a michael stone #8 replacement on a contending team.

Yeah, but if they've no hope of making the team, they may as well be sent back to their own camp asap. Besides which, I see only 3 AHL guys that will spend any time at all in camp. ATOs - I have no idea, but why would they be a better choice than MacDonald?

We need bodies, but we don't necessarily need them beyond the first few preseason games.

I'd much rather see our complete roster play together longer heading into the season.
