It started in 1912 as a marketing gimic to celebrate cowboy culture and a fading way of life by a guy from New York

It’s always been faux nostalgia for a time passed by that never existed. That was the whole concept. It was offered to Winnipeg. It’s based off of wedicks experience with Buffalo Bills Wild West show.

But irrespective of the Stampede's origins, after more than 100 years of smashing success in Calgary it absolutely has become an integral part of the cultural fabric of the city, and by extension the Western culture that it celebrates. It seems silly to me that anyone would attempt to hand-wave away something that is undeniably an essential element of the identity of the city of Calgary.

It's not "fake." It may have been in many respects manufactured, but this only as an honorific exaggeration of something that was always imprinted upon the region—in this case, the agricultural and ranching roots behind Calgary's settlement and growth. It is to the point now where the origins don't even matter anymore—certainly, they matter much less than what the Calgary Stampede has become, and how important it continues to be to the identity of Calgary.

I’m the furthest from the type who’s “working to confirm” but a guy at OJs said what we obviously know, full time retros around the horn. Home/away with Horse as 3rd. That type of fashion is trending. It would sell very well.

19 will look beautiful on Horsey.

Interesting, because that seems to contradict a previous tweet from Popowich:

Didn't think about the 40th Anniversary angle, but it makes sense from a marketing perspective.

Putting the logo aside, damn that's an ugly hat. The Flames released some beauties around playoff time, including the gorgeous official playoff hat. but these are pretty ugly and the quality seems lacking.

Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and even Edmonton have the same agricultural and ranching heritage yet don’t slap a cowboy hat and a horse on everything.

I agree that it is a mythology that which Calgary Identity is based

As for the Saddledome the Saddle as part of the western theme did not occur to the origina architect
https://web.archive.org/web/20090122...a-39821fa3f0f9

Quote:
Graham and his team never set out to build a stadium with a western theme.
Graham McCourt Architects, now GEC Architecture, was experimenting with a number of designs that would fit the multi-use building's technical and budgetary requirements when the saddle shape "just happened." "There are a lot of factors that go into a building -- acoustics, air volume, mechanical systems, camera positions, structural design," Graham explains. "We were exploring all the options. We did not want to do just another arena barn. The sense of the team was to do something special. It had to be unique in form, character and function, but there was no comment about making a western statement
It’s interesting that the saddle shape became part of the western mythology of the city.

Anyway I like the horse head logo on hats and shoulders and will stop detailing the thread.

I just don't get what's wrong with a couple cowboy hats and horses here and there. It's not like the old-timey aesthetic is deterring Calgary from advancing and modernizing as a city. It's all just a part of what Calgary has to offer, nothing more.

Yike!! This official playoff hat has too much sweatpants feel to it, and IMHO, far from gorgeous.

Well, yeah. It’s because none of these places are fortunate enough to have the Calgary Stampede. They are all poorer for it.

Dear... God... no.

Leave that abomination of a logo on the trash heap of history where it belongs. Appropriate that it was worn during the worst era of Flames hockey in franchise history.

Awesome work, as per usual.

Maybe a thin strip of gold against the red in the nose flames and the forehead might help spread the pallet around?

That hat looks like they found a box of unsold inventory from the 90’s when they were cleaning up an unused storage closet in the Saddledome after the flood.

Zephyr? Chip & Pepper weren’t available to manufacture the hats?
