I think 8 years at an average of $8.5 million with a heavily front loaded contract. A million dollars today is worth more than a million dollars in 5 to 8 years, considering buying power, inflation, and investment potential. I think they can reduce the AAV by front loading the contract substantially. The Tkachuk’s have been around the bush and he likely has strong financial advising support.

Of course, the owners would need to sign off on a such a deal and it doesn’t come without risk.

The option is not in the poll but I think it will be 2 years @ $6.75-7.5M.

Edit: maybe make it into two polls - one for AAV and one for term? (not that I'm complaining).

Even if he holds out, he will eventually sign a new contract.

I care more about term than dollar amounts. I hope it's 7 or 8 years. Cap hit will probably be fine either way.

However, I'm guessing that it ends up being about 6 years at 7.75.

Tkachuk really is the definition of a "love him if he's on my team, hate him if he's on another team" player.

The guy puts up points but also does so much more. He draws penalties at one of the best rates in the league if I remember correctly. He has those intangibles that people always talk about.

I think he comes in at 5 years 8.5 million per year.

Unless there is a firm promise to enter into another deal later on.

Tkachuk wants the shorter term, but also doesn't want the lesser money that customarily goes with that.

If he would sign a 1-year deal for $5-6MM, it would be done already.

He wants term to UFA and the big bucks, just like Matthews got, Aho got, and all the other RFA's are looking for.

The Flames are pretty tight against the cap this year (but pretty flush next year). If I were the Flames I'd basically try to get them to agree to a "1 year deal" at the biggest number they can fit (probably 6.5-7.0) but with an understanding that he'll be signed to an extension (that they'll negotiate now) at the earliest possible moment for an amount that makes him whole on anything they give up this year.

So say they settle on 8.5M per for 7 they sign him for 7M this year and then extend him for 6 years at 8.75M.

Thats kind of the silver lining in all of this. If misfortune befalls the team this year for a number of reasons (and its not off to a great start) they can retool on the fly next season.

Or blow it up.

So maybe it does benefit Tkachuk to take the shortest term possible when there will be much more available to him next year.

I think it would have to be 1 year 8.5 million then. That way he has the security that he would need to be qualified at that price so the flames can't re-neg on the "deal"... Not that it would ever happen (the one year hand shake deal).

Yeah, but would you risk 50 million dollars to potentially earn 55 or 60?

I'm going full delusional and hoping he signs a very team friendly deal. He doesn't have to support his parents or his brother, shave a couple mil off the top and go for a bronze statue outside of a shiny new arena

What is the team that finished second overall missing that helped them last season? They dumped their two worst regular season players

Misfortune that has befallen this team thus far?

Valimaki injury.

And Lucic.

So yeah, not off to a great start.

Also not sure what finishing 2nd overall last year and recent or future misfortune have to do with each other.

I was really hoping the Flames would sign all their young stars to 8 year deals. Instead Johnny signed for only 6. Monahan got 7. We did get Lindholm and Hanifin for 6 years each. Now we're waiting for Tkachuk. I would love for him to sign for 8 years too but... really. so what if he only signs for 5 years? Maybe even 4 years? That's still a long time away and if he remains with the team during the length of his contract, that's still a long time with the team.

At the rate contracts are going, an 8 year contract only benefits the player in the latter 2 or 3 years because they'll have the player at a much cheaper cap hit than they could get if they were looking for a contract at that time.

I would not be upset if Tkachuk only signed for 4 or 5 years.

I’m still salty about the Zucker and Kadri misses.

So, he's guaranteed only $7MM, and if he gets injured for life between now and Jan 1 he's walks away from, what $60MM?

If Tkachuk is comfortable signing an 8 year deal, he'll sign one. Why would he risk the interim period with no guarantee?
