There is no guarantee that a gunshot would have been heard.
Will just have to wait to see what is announced.

If they found them together, I would say suicide or exposure to the elements was the cause.
EDIT: If they were hidden in a fold of land in heavy brush, gunshots would definitely be muffled.

It's possible, there were divers sent to the area. They may have kept the details obscured around this until further along in the investigation.

If I had to take wild stab at it, my guess is the boat flipped, they got soaked came to shore and probably didn't make it through the night.

I was up in the MacKenzie Delta, and 30 minutes with the flies on shore was enoguh to have me considering that. I's amazing how they can demoralize you so quickly.

I did a hike up by Babine Lake (70 or so km north of Smithers) and we had to wear a bug jacket over flannel shirts. The mosquitos and black flies would descend on you in swarms. My buddies and I would try to see who could kill the most in a single slap, and each time, there were too many to count.

The death of suspects like this always feels like such a waste to me, and I'll never fully understand why they had to take people down with them. It's essentially murder-suicide, regardless of how they died here, and that's just sad. These two lived such pitiful lives that they had to kill three others to satisfy something. Just go and kill yourselves, or better yet, get help before anyone has to die. To kill three innocent people first is the most heartbreaking aspect of this.

They didn't want to die like this, though. They wanted to "go out in a blaze of glory", which would almost certainly have meant more innocent lives lost at the hands of these two rabid animals.
They didn't "win" anything. They likely died scared, wet, cold, hungry, and literally eaten alive by bugs or worse.
I think plenty of justice was served, just not your idea of justice.

We'll never know what their final wishes were. While you suspect this wasn't the death they were hoping for, I suspect they were wholly satisfied they got away with their sick actions and evaded Canadian law enforcement, probably proud as hell to be outlasting them for that long. My suspicion is I don't think they were too upset in going out. No justice was served here for anyone except the two killers and their own death wish.

I really wouldn't put stock into anything the dad said. The guy had a book out a week after the events.
By most other accounts these guys were running scared, not looking to die, not looking to go out in a blaze of glory. Maybe at one point that was the intention but seemed to have quickly change to them just trying to flee. Which is what their close friend said.
Maybe they'll have some video on their phone or some manifesto so the families do get closer, but really the best course of action for society is to forget them and move on. Prevent copycats. That won't be the case, but it should be.

Number of years ago, we used to fly into remote lakes in northern Alberta by float plane. Recall the pilot mentioning on our first trip out that if he were to crash, he'd just made sure he had bug spray nearby so he could grab it and hopefully run clear of the plane. Thought it was interesting that bug spray was his main priority and not water or food.

It depends on the person. Some might not care but I've watched many crime shows where families of victims say they wish they had answers as to why their loved ones were murdered.
It doesn't take the pain away but not knowing makes it hurt even more to some.

I don’t think these idiots have the balls to kill themselves. I am betting on exposure after getting wet. The temperature has been going down to 5 degrees at night. The fact they found discarded items belonging to them makes me think that they were getting to weak to carry stuff or their belongings got wet and heavy.
They were holding on for dear life and didn’t seem like they wanted to die.
