Default NHL network top 20 (25) centres

NHL.com has a list of the top 20 plus 5 on the bubble, so basically the top 25 centres .

Monahan comes in at #19.

There are 4 teams with 2 guys in the top 25 Toronto, Pittsburgh, Tampa and Washington.

There are 6 teams that have a top-25 C that missed the playoffs. Edmonton, Florida, Buffalo, Vancouver and Chicago and Detroit.

14 of the 16 teams that made the playoffs had a top 25 C Nashville and Vegas did not and and they both lost in the first round.

Nashville has since obtained Duchense leaving Columbus with no top 25 C.

I personally would have had Ryan Johansen and possibly Dubois at least on the bubble, based on their more complete game.

How important is a #1C to a team's success? Playoff success?

Monahan at 19 seems a bit low to me, but whatever, it's a stupid ranking.

I think Bergeron should be higher. I'd rather have Bergeron than a few guys above him on that list. I also think Kuznetsov is too high... haven't been a huge fan of his.

Personally I'd switch Crosby and McDavid, and switch Monahan with Couture. Maybe switch Malkin and Seguin too. Toronto guys a little high but still on the list anyway. Couturier needs to be in the top 20 too

Not a bad list overall though

Generally I agree with the list. I think Kuznetsov is too high. Monahan could be potentially higher than Kuznetsov and Couture. I think Matthews is a bit high too. I could see him around #8 or #9.
Couturier needs to be on this list, and Malkin is slightly lower than I would have expected him to be as well.

Shouldn't Toews be on this list?

Pretty much what I thought. I was going through the list thinking "Okay, maybe 19 is fine" but then I hit 16 and that's where the list got kinda meh. Not bad though for these types of things, which can often be good for chuckle.

After the statistical year he had, I can see him cracking the Top 20 potentially. He is still a top two way center.

For a game today, I'd definitely have Bergeron over Matthews but I suppose they are factoring in potential a little bit.

He was an absolute beast when they won the cup though. 32 points in 24 games. Elevated his game at the most important time. That will win a lot of people over.

It's very important. In fact, having top 20 players at any position is important to success.

I think it would be easy to make a case based on statistical evidence to push Monahan up in such rankings, but this is just like some dude's opinion. The reasons he uses to justify his ranks seem pretty arbitrary.

Toews, Barzal, Duchense, Couturier and Larkin.

No Kopitar in the top 25 who went from #6 going into last season to missing the list in 2019.

On Aug 18 it will be interesting where they slot Gio in the top 20 defensemen. He missed the list last year ... Hamilton came in at #18.

While the Oilers do suck enormously, they do so in spite of McDavid's clear superiority to many other players. It is hard not to rank him in #1 or #2 spot given his talent and ability to produce with literal nobodies.

What is more telling about the Oil situation is that Drai is not listed (rightly so, but that will cause fits.)

I agree that he seems low, but looking at the list I can really only justify him at 15-16 depending on what you think of Eichel and his trajectory.

This should hopefully shut up the dreadful "not a #1 Centre" crew (though I know it won't...)

Does anyone have the bubble 5 that they ranked? They don't show up on the linked list.

I think he's a bit of a victim of his teams circumstance really. The Hawks weren't what they once were so everyone is a bit down on him now. Funny enough when the Hawks were the class of the league Toews was a bit over rated as people were clamouring that he was better than Crosby. This might be the balancing out, now people are under rating Toews.

Just at first glance at that list, is Ryan O'Reilly really a better player than Toews? Is Logan Couture? You said a few years ago, but here are the offensive stats for the last three seasons show similar numbers.

O'Reilly 193 total points 0.82 points per game
Toews 191 total points 0.83 points per game
Couture 183 total points 0.78 points per game

Pretty similar numbers offensively. And Toews is no slouch defensively either.

Personally, if there was a draft to build a team for just one season to try and win a championship, I am taking Toews over those two... possibly even more on that top 20 list.

Dude, you aren't even spelling the wrong spelling of Duchene's name right.

Lol! I don't even understand how people make this error anyways. When it's spelled "Duchesne" like the former french hockey player, it is pronounced like the school... Du-Cane...

No one has ever mispronounced Duchene's name like that- it actually takes a concerted effort to add the S in there, and a lack of phonetic knowledge. So adding the non-existing s is a hold over from misunderstanding how another former NHLers name is correctly pronounced.
