Here's Cisco's take on it.

http://blogs.cisco.com/news/2007/01/...ne_tradem.html

Really puts Apple in the bad light.

Sorry, I wrote in "Here is some more news" that didn't make it into the post. Wasn't arguing with you, not even sure why I quoted you.

LOL, no problem. I guess I'm just used to people not actually reading the articles linked.

Personally, I think the best part of the phone is that the whole interface is created via software. "New models" could be had by updrading the software. Now if only they had put more memory into it (says the person't who's first computer was a C64 after taking a computer class that used Commodore Pet computers)

They wanted it flash, so I'm guessing the memory was limited to 8GB (isn't 8GB the biggest amount of flash memory right now?). I'm sure down the road (probably in a year), it will be up to 12GB and in a couple years you'll have 30GB flash memory. I really wonder how fast it will run the OS since it is based on a flash system?

Pretty awesome interface and all, but I'll wait until the second revision.

I took outta that Cisco wanted to have involvement in Apple's product. Moreso than a trademark deal anyway. The interesting thing is that Apple owns the iPhone trademrk in Austrailia, the UK, and the far east. What will happen when Cisco goes to sell their iPhone in these regions.

Looks kinda neat but im not a fan of the cost. And by the time its released i dont think its gonna be all that great anymore. Take a look at this: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/11/i...rated-at-birth
I know it doesnt have all the features but intersting none the less, if apple woud fix the screen scratching issues, outdated 2 mp camera i would definately consider an getting and unlock version.
Also does this phone have built in batteries like i-pods? tell me they dont?

Yes, the phone has built in batteries.

*HOWEVER* I've had my 2nd generation iPod for 3 years now, used almost daily and while the recharge life is dwindling, it is still usable. So it's not like you would need a new battery every week. This is an every 3 to 4 years thing.

According to www.ipodbatteryfaq.com, Apple will likely ask the vendor to fix battery problems. So as it seems likely that Rogers will get iPhone, you would take the iPhone to a Rogers kiosk in a nearby mall and they would be able to swap the batteries.

The other issue with swapable batteries is that with most phones you could buy an extra battery, charge it, and carry it around on days when you are not going to be near an electrical outlet. Likely third party vendors will sell external battery packs just like with the iPod. Even with the Belkin external battery pack on my iPod, it still fits in my dress shirt pocket.

I seem to remember that the "i" started to become widely used after the first iMac was introduced in 1998. That doesn't change the fact that Cisco holds the US trademark, of course, but I would like to see what they plan to do about Apple holding the iPhone trademark in the UK, Australia and some other countries.

Actually, if you read that Cisco blog you will see it says

We have since 2000, when we bought a company called Infogear Technology, which had developed a product that combined web access and telephone. Infogear’s registrations for the mark date to 1996, before iMacs and iPods were even glimmers in Apple’s eye.
But I think al the "i" craze came after the "e" craze.

We skipped "a", went to "e", now "i". Natural progression says the next vowel craze will then be "o". Quick, someone copyright the names oBook and oPhone!

It doesn't make sense though because 'i' should come before 'e' except after c?

True, but we are in Canada so the end of that rule is 'Unless it sounds like an "eh"'

Ooooo, now it's getting interesting.

Quote:
If Cisco didn't launch a product using the iPhone name, their trademark registration would be canceled and they would have no bargaining chips with Apple. So in order to keep the trademark active, they had to file the Declaration of Use, and start selling a product under that trademark.
Quote:
If Apple can prove in federal court that the Declaration of Use contained misstatements of fact, i.e. that there was no continuous use, then Cisco's registration can be canceled. This could clear the way for the next company in line for the iPhone trademark, Ocean Telecom Services LLC (widely regarded as a front company for Apple). It could also explain why Apple decided not to sign the agreement Cisco proposed.

I get a kick out of the "iPhone sucks... you can't develop for it because there isn't a full implementation of OS X. Why would anyone buy it if you can't develop for it?".
