Yep ... would be great if he was able to skate at Hathaway speed and be on the ice with the smurfs that the Flames need protecting.... like he was 3-4 years ago.

If you want to worry/ gloat that Edmonton is worse off than the Flames it is a very low bar. If somehow the Oilers become competition that the Flames have to focus on chances are this trade will be as lopsided as Lindholm/Hanifin for Hamilton and a year of Ferland.
In what universe is Lucic a 3M player? What team would you imagine taking him on as a 3M player without dumping a $3M failure of their on on the Flames?
Having 3M on your 4th line / press box is a recipe for disaster? Are you planning on Lucic being more on the Flames than that?
|
Reeves is making 2.75M in Vegas, so if you think Lucic is a good "tough guy" 3M isn't really all that out of line.

Lucic will be a better Flame than Neal ever was/would be.

Nick Backstrom was acquired to get the sixth that came with him for David Jones
As a guy that had literal weeks left in his career that’s an odd name to use to try and make your point

I'm just glad to see Calgary upping their physicality while teams like the Jets, for example, have allowed their biggest hitters to walk away this off season.

Reeves is also older than Lucic, never had the offensive success of Lucic, and interestingly enough, doubled his production last year from the year before after a change of scenery at the age of 31.
I think the change in scenery, the difference in leadership around the team and the lowered expectations placed upon him are all going to result in a rejuvenated Lucic.
I also think his presence is going to give our skilled, smaller guys more freedom from cheap shots and stick work(no, not saying eliminated), and our agitators will have more latitude to do what they do. Judging from interviews of people who have played with him, I believe the guys in the room are going to love Lucic, and this will help solidify an already strong room.
Again, I think this is a huge win for this team and I'm really excited for the season to start.
Also, the oilers have almost $5 million in buyouts and retained salary next year. haha.

How so? My point was that Jones and Jokipaka were already at the bottom of the cliff as Flames. They did exactly what was expected when they were traded away.
Not a big point but it would have been a pretty major shock if either of them got in another 40 NHL games after leaving the Flames.
Hamilton fell off a cliff in the same way as he dropped from being a top 2 d-man to a #4/5 and to a 5 year low point total. He was not a big surprise on Carolina, either up or down.

Dougie Hamilton definitely didn't fall off a cliff last year. Playoff inconsistency aside, he had a pretty standard regular season. To call him a #5 is just silly.

Yep the 50 or so more hits from Lucic that Hathaway gave the Flames will move the Flames within 100 hits of being the 30th least hitting team in the NHL.
It will be interesting how Lucic responds to being the designated hitter on a no hitting team. Maybe he will inspire Bennett Tkachuk Hannifin and Lindholm to double their hits...
I give that he would be a nuclear deterrent so they have someone who is responsible to go against Reeves or other designated goon.

Traded a player who was virtually adding nothing to the roster for a player who brings something this team is sorely missing, nasty toughness.
First time Lucic drops the gloves in defense of Johnny this entire board will see the light.

Hopefully. Because as nice as it is to have that element on the bottom 6, the top 6 could use a little more nasty.

If Edwin Encarnacion on the 2012 Jays taught me anything, it's that teams like this usually miss the playoffs.

NO he did not fall off a cliff. He played exactly as was expected. Glencross and Hudler fell off a cliff. the rest of the Flames traded away played pretty close to expectations.
Even Russell pretty much delivered what was expected in Dallas and his first year in Edmonton. He had 25 playoff games as a top-4 D-man in those 2 seasons

Or does his hit total plummet because hit totals have more to do with who's counting them and being on a terrible team that never has the puck?

Putting the contract piece aside and thinking about Lucic, a couple of questions come to mind:
Between Reaves, Simmonds, and Lucic who is the best player at this point?
What would Lucic have to do this year for us to feel like we got full value for 5.25 million cap hit for the year?

I don't see how Lucic's toughness matters. He can't skate or play anymore.
