We have AC on the 2nd floor only, and only run it from 730pm until 3am at 20.5, then 21 for the last couple hours. I really feel like AC is only necessary to be able to sleep. If it gets ungodly hot in the house we put it on for a short period.
"It only takes 5 minutes to downtown Calgary from Airdrie."
I'm originally from Medicine Hat, where you really do need AC because it gets into the 30+ degrees pretty regularly in the summer. When we moved up to Calgary, my parents thought the same thing where you don't need it in Calgary, and that way of thinking was instilled in me even after I moved out. Now after a bunch of years, I'm like, why the heck shouldn't I get AC? It cost me about $3-$4K. I spent that much building my deck.
Now that I have it, I regret not getting it earlier TBH. Yah, we might not need it as frequently as down in the Hat, but the few weeks that I do need it, it's glorious. I was able to convince my parents to get it too. Now when I go over there for dinner on Sundays, it's not boiling hot in their west facing dining room.
Needing am AC or not also depends a lot on which direction your windows are facing.
I used to live in a townhouse where the window of the bedroom is facing west, and it f-ing roasting in the evening.
Now I live in a place when the bedroom window is facing south, I rarely have to turn on the AC (it came with the house). But shoveling snow in the winter on my north-facing driving is a b*tch!
I know you're being sarcastic for the purposes of this thread, but in all honesty, it does get brought up on a regular basis.
Sure, you don't "need" AC in Calgary, but life is so much more luxurious with it.

Have you tried installing reflective film on the upstairs windows? It helped a ton to change a room I had from sauna to satisfactory.

I find 22 getting toward uncomfortably cold.
I set my temperature based on the upstairs temp for the evenings, and the main floor gets down to 21 or 21.5 sometimes. I get cranky how I'm freezing in the middle of a nice summer day.
As nice as Central AC would be, I bought a portable unit from Best Buy and only use it in my bedroom when it's super hot at night. I can live with the heat on any other floor. Fans and cold drinks keep me cool. Night is the only time I really care about being cooler, so the portable unit does me just fine. If I'm desperate to cool down, I'll just go chill in the basement for a bit.
We have a rather large bedroom and ensuite but this thing running for a few hours works perfectly. So much so that we actually turn it off when we go to bed.
I was also concerned about what many people say here, that upstairs is still hot (especially since our furnace can barely heat our bedroom). Not an issue with a $350 portable unit.

I had a portable air conditioner at my old place, we only used it in our bedroom. I can safely say that many summer nights that thing was the only thing that saved the Saturday. Is it as good as real air conditioning, no course not. But it can seriously help you sleep on a really hot night
