I choose to remain optimistic. There is a LOOOOONG list of players whom, when freed from Edmonton, go on to be better players. Lupul, Satan, Taylor, Dubnyk, etc. Irrational perspective, but I'm clinging to it.

Cond 3rd + Lucic (12.5% retained) for Neal

So the Oilers are going to have a $6.50M cap hit out of this, and the Flames are going to have a $5.25M cap hit.

The plan is, he will keep losing "trades" to the Oilers, until the Oilers are so arrogantly confident that they trade McDavid to the Flames believing that they can win any trade.

You know how arrogant the Oilers and the fans get.

Neal’s complete lack of ability to defend is why I’m happy this went thru.
Colorado preyed on him in the playoffs.

I'm happy I can cheer for Lucic again. Loved him on the Bruins... Didn't warrant the Oilers contract at all though... But he brings a lot of what Neal lacked, in that he brings heart and toughness. I'd rather have Lucic on the team than James "Entitled" Neal, who seemed to not give a damn.

Well the conditional 3rd is better than nothing providing it's attainable but I think the Flames should have received more back for helping the Oilers get rid of that contract.

Yeah at least Lucic isn’t going to be blowing the zone... when we don’t have the puck.

I'd like to know what the conditions on that pick are. Can it get better based on performance?

I don't know if the expansion protection was really much of a bind for the Oilers.

Other than McDavid, Draisatl and RNH, what other forward was worth protecting?

The expansion implications to the Oilers was probably overblown.

I'm not going to #### on the trade because there's people with more energy than I who have already done that. Instead I'll focus on one of the small positives and that is that Lucic actually wants to be a Flame and seems excited to come here. Nothing worse than a player with a ####ty attitude or unwillingness to buy into the team. Say what you will about Lucic but I don't think either of those are an issue with him.

Tkachuk and Bennett were just given a "hall pass". I'd love to see Bennett centre Tkachuk and Lucic.

Plus I am forever in debt with gratitude to any member of the 2011 Bruins. I have no problem with Lucic or Marchand. Players you love to hate.

If Lucic puts up 30 points and is a physical presence and adds an inch or two to every player on this roster, he still brings more value than Neal putting up 20 goals and 45 points.

I also think they are smart enough businessmen to wrap their head around first year Econ concepts like “sunk costs” and “time value of money” to realize you save money buying out bad contacts. They have been buying out a ton lately.

Neal buyout and Ferland signing costs them identical dollars this season to just paying Neal, and they would get the better player. It’s a part of Treliving’s job to be able to sell ownership on good ideas
 |
You’re missing the point. They’re writing a massive cheque (or numerous smaller ones if you want to be semantic) and then having to spend that money again in another player. No way they were ever buying out Neal.
