He is still owed $3 million in salary for this season plus he gets $4M, $5M, and $4M for the final three years of the deal (in combined bonuses and salary), which will all be paid by the Flames (except for the retained percentage).
If the Flames keep him for the rest of the contract, he'll be paid $16 million in real dollars against a total cap hit of $24 million (minus whatever percentage the Oilers retain).
Neal is set to be paid $23 million over the next four seasons with the same total cap hit.

Hopefully this isnt our owners getting cheap.

I am willing to bet that just yesterday 99% of this board would have agreed Lucic is an absolutely useless plug. That doesn't really change today. As bad as Neal was, I can't see Lucic having a better chance at contributing next season than Neal with a second chance would have. Not a fan of this deal.

The good news is that Lucic actually has a fit on this team. He can play 3rd or 4th line minutes and at least do something there. Neal can't skate, doesn't muck it up, and seemed to have a bad attitude whenever he didn't get 1st or 2nd line minutes. He never proved that he actually deserved first or second line minutes when he played there and he didn't alter his game like Stajan or Tanguay did to fit an alternate role on the team so that could earn a spot.
I don't like the fact that we can't really buy out Lucic. We are stuck with him. We should have been compensated more for that fact.

Imagine how big of a deal this trade would have been if it was made 5 years ago

I like this move. We need size and toughness, and this gives us a "nuclear deterrent". It makes me even happier that Looch has better advanced stats than Neal. The reality is that Neal's effectiveness has diminished, as he doesn't hit, fight, or intimidate. Looch can still do those things.Sounds like Neal wanted out anyway. I think putting Looch on this team with our leadership, coaches, and offence-he will bounce back somewhat.
And for everyone talking about his skating, I would bet dollars to donuts that Lucic blows Neal's doors off in a race.
His presence will elevate Johnny and Mony, and provide relief to guys like Tkachuk, Benny, and Hamonic.

If we don't get a pick and we only get the oilers to pay $600k, then Treliving is legit on one of those dumb GM "hot seat" lists in September.

by the reactions in this thread i have a hard time believing most posters here actually watched the trainwreck that was james neal's tenure in calgary
if the flames are gonna be paying 6 million ish bucks on a 4th liner, he might as well be able to facepunch if hes not going to contribute offensively, defensively or skate

Neal sucks...
Lucic sucks...
This isn't as fun as I thought a suck-off would be.

I'm cool with it as long as Lucic has agreed to waive his NMC for the expansion draft.

Where is this Neal cap hit of $6.3 million coming from? It's $5.75 mil accordingly to Capfriendly.

Normally I would just defer to you on these things but I think you're misreading capfriendly.
Or maybe there is a gas leak here and I should get it inspected.
I'm looking at capfriendly and it says his salary over the next 4 years is:
Salary
$1m
$2.5m
$1
------------
$4.5m
Bonus
$3m
$2.5m
$3m
-----------
$8.5m
$4.5m
$8.5m
-----------
$13m

From HF Boards and his deterrent level lol
I can picture it now.
The Flames are in the defensive zone and Lucic is covering his point man. After a mid-shift line change Gaudreau is on the ice with Lucic. Gaudreau strips the puck away behind the net and immediately gets clobbered in the corner below the goal line.
Lucic skates over to stand up for Gaudreau but by the time he gets there all 9 players on the ice are in the offensive zone.

I think I would have been happier trading a 1st round pick for Ryan Reaves than this.
Lucic has to be at least that impactful for this to not be a tire fire.

God this franchise is a tire fire at times. Welcome to another decade of mediocrity. Never the worst but never the best.

I think people are adding what the Oilers would retain on Lucic into a supposed Neal cap hit
