I'm bad at feel good stuff.

I am okau with this. I think Lucic has a better chance of bouncing back and actually helping the team. As long as the NMC is removed.

would have rather just buyout Neal and take the long term hit

Could have signed Ferland. Jesus why didn’t they just do that

James Neal was a healthy scratch at 5.75M to end the season. When it came down to the most important game, the coaches thought it was best to keep Neal off the ice. And, given his play, they were almost certainly right.
If Lucic comes in at under 5.75M cap hit, even if he is a healthy scratch, it's no loss. They both suck.

However, Lucic is also considerably cheaper as is, forget about salary retention. In terms of actual cost he is owed 16M compared to Neal's 23M. So 7M in actual savings for the Flames (pre-retention).

 And then a conditional pick.

I'll take it as a win. Neal could bounce back, but given how absolutely terrible he was last year, I'd rather just not risk it.

Rumour yesterday was only 10% retention. Makes him cheaper than Neal, but not by much.

Who cares about actual cost it isn't my money, all that matters is cap hit.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNICJust following up on @GenePrincipe and @RealKyper — only Lucic/Neal involved with EDM retaining some money and including a conditional draft pick.

Being able to expose Lucic in the expansion draft to a team who might want an experienced player for a couple years might help the Flames.
Otherwise we'd have to get up one of our young defensemen.

Here's my "try to make this palatable" take:
 a. No NMC plus less salary might make Lucic tradable - more than Neal at this point.
 b. The NMC also makes Lucic buriable going forward. So maybe this is a pure cap space issue. Maybe makes Tkahcuk an easier signing.
 c. It does address toughness I guess.
 d. I got nothing else.

"If neal hits 20 goals or the oilers make the playoffs" is the pick condition I bet.

lol. Milan Lucic is not an NHL calibre player. Literally the only reasons he's still in the league are his contract and the fact that the Oilers don't even have 12 NHL calibre forwards.

It's mind boggling if we think Lucic is going to add anything of value here.
