I think it would be easy for a fringe guy to throw in the towel on improvement with the Oilers. It sounds like they don't really have a standard for work ethic that they actively uphold or that there's a vet leadership core to help the youngins along. Specifically, wasn't what Ference and Hall said not long back about the culture and practices pretty damning?

It would take a 1st for each year remaining to take Lucic's contract.

Brouwer and Neal really aren't very comparable... Brouwer was an absolute sinkole on EVERYBODY while Neal actually made some players better, notably Tkachuk who actually improved defensively while playing with Neal while sacrificing only a little offense. I'd like to see those two paired up more next year, going back to Vegas Neal is very much a player who needs better linemates (Perron, Haula) to succeed and this is reflected in his WoWY analytics

I guess the numbers likely bear this out, but I really can’t think of what Neal actually did on the ice to make his linemates better. I really think Neal needs to come into camp and prove he deserves better linemates.

I just think it could happen on circumstance alone. If Frolik is shipped out with no external replacement, who is more likely to be slotted into that 2RW role?

I'd like to see Neal given a shot there. He succeeded in Vegas given good linemates and tanked on the infrequent occasion that they were taken away. He registered slightly over a hundred minutes each with Gaudreau and Tkachuk at 5v5 this year and the pairings both worked well from shot-generation and shot-prevention metric standpoints -- neither Gaudreau nor Tkachuk were significantly hurt by the pairing, either, and Tkachuk seemingly benefited. Neal dragged Ryan, Bennett, and Jankowski down substantially, though, specifically in the defensive zone -- he needs elite (or at least excellent) linemates to be successful.

Spoiler!

^ yeah they have to try something. Which really highlights why he is trying to shop a defenseman for forward help. Subtract Frolik and Hathaway and the forward depth could use some help.

The Flames have lost every trade they have ever made with Oilers, so I guess it is time to try again.

All two of them?
Smid for Horak?
Staios for Johnson and a 3rd?

Tough to see a winner there.
Lost a 3rd round pick I guess.

Lol how do you figure?

The Smid trade was a no win for either team. Brossoit has only started to look decent when he left the Oilers for nothing. Smid was a Dman during the rebuild and suffered injuries.

In fact I call that trade a win due to how heartbroken the Oilers fans were when the trade broke.

As for the Staios trade how was that a loss? My only real memory of Staios was when he scored the tying goal late in a game in Edmonton in 2011 when the Oilers coughed up a 4-1 lead in the last 15 minutes of the game (I was in the building and it was an extremely memorable game for me)

I saw an interesting trade proposal online. CBJ trades Cam Atkinson to EDM for Nugent-Hopkins. This allows Draisatl to center the 2nd line and keeps a prolific goal-scorer on McDavid’s line. Salaries are basically a wash.

Columbus has need of a C. They have a ton of young W on the way up. Atkinson has a NMC but maybe he’d waive to skate with Connor?

Your graph shows a drop in play for Gaudreau (and Czarnik as well for good measure) when with Neal. The only forward not dragged down was Tkachuk, and with 103 minutes (4 minutes less and he doesn't even make the chart) and barely a noticeable difference in quality, this is closer to a blip than anything else.

If anything this goes to show just how bad Neal was.
