Even then, that's more just circumstance of him being our only "verteran" AHL goalie. Doesn't really speak to his value as a prospect.

Also, he didn't play any games last year despite a few minor injuries to Smith and Rittich.

Dressing to be the backup is one thing, but I doubt he will get any starts unless Rittich or Talbot suffer a long term injury.

Gillies didn't play any games last year. I think it is actually a pretty reasonable bet that between Rittich and Talbot all the games are covered. I can see Gillies spending a few games on the bench, but starting and playing is another matter altogether.

Gillies will be 26 this season with a pretty underwhelming AHL career thus far.

To put that into perspective, he's 6 months younger than Jordan Binnington, who made the show after putting up a .926 last year in the AHL and a .927 before his call-up this year.

Gillies put up a .889 sv% in the AHL at 25 years old. Time to read the tea leaves. He's a long shot at this point.

Yes, goalies are unpredictable, but that doesn't mean they aren't legit prospects. Gillies has played 12 NHL games already, and will almost certainly play more this year.

Pettersons earned his praise. I think we can acknowledge the. Through an insane work ethic and a drive to compete like few others. Pair that with the hands he has on display, tough not to bump him up a big huge chunk in the farm system rankings. From all accounts he earned the right to be his NCAA teams big dog.

We will see how his season goes but if he improves yet again, the Flames scouting staff should pat themselves on the back yet again.
I guess the thing that stands out for me the most is the fact he has taken his hockey career into his own hands and seems bent on forging his career the right way.

intrigued by Pospisil, Koumontzis, and Pettersen primarily because I think Jim Cummins has an eye for talent. Went with Pospisil

Parsons for me. Kid is as legitimate a goalie prospect as they come. He isn't the best goalie prospect in the world, but I would put him into that second tier, and much better than any goalie that the Flames have drafted since Vernon - and yes, that's saying a lot. Who knows how he will develop, but I am betting that at some point this season there will be a "Tyler Fricken Parsons" thread.

Pettersen next for me, and it will signal the end of that first tier of prospects.

I can't believe some people think that this pool is shallow. There are so many prospects that I would rank as having solid middle-six potential left on the board - maybe even top 6 guys in Zavgorodny, Nikolaev and Sveningsson. Though I have him ranked considerably down the list due to his indifference when it comes to his compete level, Ruzika will be one of the more interesting prospects to watch down in the A. If the Flames can get him to train hard and compete hard all season, he will be in the running for the best prospect next season as his size + IQ + skill level is extremely attractive.

Maybe it is because the Flames haven't picked in the top 10 lately, and thus people just assume that the pool is shallow, but in my opinion it is rather deep. You can make the point on D that it is shallow, but everywhere else - including goaltending - should make you go to bed with dreams of a consistently good Flames' team for years to come.

I watched him his whole junior career and we are not nuts. Scouts gave him the nickname Quick Jr. They must be nuts too.

There's a better chance of Gillies being bought out in the second buyout phase than there is of him starting games in the NHL this season.

Gillies bought out? Not likely. If they decide there's not enough nets to go around they'll trade or even just loan him before they buy him out

Yep

I haven't voted for him yet, but it's not a recency thing. He was making waves all season in US college hockey for his production at his age.

You never know where these guys go from here, but being excited about MEP's progress since draft day only makes sense.
