I know there is a longer history of production but, how does Kevin Hayes get 7 mil per while Dzingel gets 3.375 and no term? Is there that much of a gap... not overly familiar with either player so I could be missing something.

That's right. I wish the Flames could have picked him up at this pricetag. Oh well

Good deal for Carolina. Bennett has got to be south of this.

Dzingel got benched and pressbox when he was with Columbus. He was offered way more with Senators before he was traded at deadline. He gambled and lost.

Because the Flyers are the Flyers. They are the NHL's equivalent of a dog chasing its tail. The Hayes contract is an outlier born of stupidity.

Brandon Tanev got 6 six years, Kevin Hayes got 7 years (and ridiculous money) ... Dzingel gets 2 and moderate money. Free agency can be weird.

This will really annoy those up north, so I love it.

yup. that might the worst contract signed in a while. It really feels like they let their egos get the best of them. "sign at any cost, so we don't look dumb for trading assets for his rights... for nothing".

Damnit. I was hoping the Flames would pick him up. Bright side is that with Ferland and Dzingel off the board the trade market ought to start picking up.

I think Gardiner is still out there as well. Things will continue to be slow until he signs.

Fair contract for the Hurricanes. Dzingel has another potential money day in two years.

Its Carolina. These contracts are a "show me" to the rest of the league. Canes won't pay him.

Yikes. Didn't Dzingel turn down a 5×5 or 5×6 or something like that from the Sens?

Whoops

Then he went to Columbus and we began to hear whispers that his compete level was low. Maybe he just wasn't happy in Columbus? Maybe Ottawa just didn't realize how big a mistake they could have been making?

Maybe he's just a victim of waiting too long for the right deal and there was no longer cap space on any teams to give him what he deserves. Then yes, big whoops!

Dzingel is a product of getting ice-time on a bad team. Someone has to score.
This isn't a bad contract but he's not a guy that I see maintaining his production.
On a good team he was a scratch.

You have to be careful of players who put up big stats on poor teams. The Sens weren't really playing defense last year and lots of guys put up big numbers.

Even Duchene's numbers dropped after leaving Ottawa. Actually, Dzingel outproduced Duchene in the regular season based on numbers alone.
