Big difference between Sven Baertschi and Michael Ferland. |

I like Ferland but isn’t it a little foolish of Benning to be spending the Canucks cap space on older free agents (Myers) rather then the future contracts of their core young players?

It's not some big deal or anything, I just as a rule wouldn't be giving term to guys like that. I'd rather pay a bit more up front for the increased flexibility.

What??? All I've heard is the exact opposite. He had that intervention and recovery all those years back and then talks about how much becoming sober has changed his life about once a year since.

Do you have new information that suggests something's changed or did you just not know the story of his sobriety?

Canucks have done real well in rounding out there forwards with guys that are tough to play against by adding Ferland and miller.

Oh, i didn't mean anything in terms of his sobriety but I can see how what i said came across that way.

basing it on burke's public comments about them being unable to 'reach' ferland over the latter half of the season. Frankly, that's a staggering admission from the former president of hockey ops.

Guys who are difficult to motivate are usually like that most/all of their careers. Rene Bourque for example.

So glad we avoided this contract. I think people forget the inconsistent Ferland we had for 2/3 of the time. It’s unfortunate but he’s gotten his bell rung too many times and he can’t play the game too many people in here fondly remember him by. He might be able to show flash in the pan performances of it. But he can’t be that guy night in night out.
Wish him the best of luck and hopefully he’s able to stay healthy. But very pleased we didn’t fall for nostalgia on this one and bring back someone who isn’t who we remembered them as.

Whether the points were coming consistently or not, a 40 point winger on a reasonable deal like this would absolutely be a benefit

We scored lots last year. We need to address team toughness IMO which would of been the reason why we would of circled around on Ferland.

Sounds good to me, too bad Calgary was likely one of the teams only offering 3 years

Good to see him get some security with the 4 year contract.
Sucks that it's with the Canucks

I’m old enough to remember when people were saying Ferland would command $7M+ AAV on the open market. Life comes at you fast.

How many concussions? I want to say 4? One last year for sure. Too much term and NTC for a physical player with that history.

If the cap went up the way it was expected too, some dummy just might have offered him $5+

Ferland is inconsistent with his toughness - just like his offense.

Yeah, and if he wasn’t inconsistent he’d be an 80 point player and the perfect power forward...and he’d make 9M.

Also, his hitting is pretty consistent. Not sure where that narrative comes from, but the data doesn't support it.

His offense? That's a different story.
