I easily do this deal if I'm Calgary. Dissapointing

I don't know about the term, but sure, the dollars are fine. But more to the point, Calgary can't afford to add that salary right now.

Of course a player is going to ask for the moon initially. Don't take it personally.
Would have much rather Ferland stayed in Carolina.

I really really really hate sports lately. The hockey offseason has been massively underwhelming and crappy from a Flames perspective. Basketball has sucked with Kawhi leaving. Baseball has sucked with Skaggs passing away. I feel like I need a win somewhere. Or a mental break. Too much losing lately.
Scum bag Canuck fans do not deserve Ferland.

Yeah, if that is what his side was asking for (more than $6 million per year and 8 years), then it is a good thing we traded him as he would be likely leaving as a free agent this year anyway.

Man does Carolina sure know how to alienate their players. Lindholm, Hanifin, Aho, and now Ferland. I don't know if it is Dundon putting his 2 cents in, but as a Hurricanes fan there is a troubling pattern emerging.

I said it a last year when he got traded, but I'm happy he's not back in Calgary. Seems like a great guy in general, but I've heard from very close people within the organization that his give a crap meter was extremely low. He really didn't care if they won or loss, and was just as, if not equally indifferent as Hamilton. He's not the right fit for the compete level that this team needs on a nightly basis.

You’re a fan of the wrong franchise for that, my dude.

Ferland's avatar on twitter has him photoshopped wearing a Canuck jersey, and his profile background has a huge Canuck logo lol. It didn't take him long to move on from the Hurricanes.

I trust my source, as he is very ingrained in the room there. I won't give his name either. I understand that it's not substantiated, but if mods want to ask me, they can PM me. I won't tell anybody else though nor post publicly.

I think this is a good signing by Benning. 3.5M is a VERY fair number for Ferland and an extra year is what was needed to ensure he signed with the Canucks as multiple teams were offering the same for a year less. If he produces second line numbers, it's a steal for 3.5M. If he goes pointless for a stretch of games before going on one of his streaks again, only to go on an extended skid again, it's still a reasonable return for 3.5M. His inconsistency seems to be accounted for in the cap hit.

^^ No source required. Burke as much said this on the record. I suspect that was the management feel on Ferland. His teammates might love him, but of course they'll see him differently.

I don't have any strong feelings on Ferland other than upgrading him by getting Lindholm was the best thing the team did in years. If he was on the Flames, he would likely be on the 3rd line a lot, so not worth the money or risk for us IMO.
But I will say this. I have a Hockey News way back from Iginla's first couple of seasons in the league and there is a whole report in it with direct quotes from Brian Sutter saying similar things about Iginla. Was too easy going. Didn't hate losing enough. He even implied that he was lazy at times. I should scan it and upload it as I am sure it wouldn't be online given how old it is.
I think sometimes competitive nature improves with maturity.

I am still thrilled with the trade and the assets we got to keep and sign for great contracts in trade for Ferland and Hamilton. Brilliant moves by Treliving. Also, with the ASK being reported as double what he was signed for, likely, Ferland would have been walking from Calgary as well.

A year later, the trade looks like this
Hanifin, Lindholm
for
Hamilton, 2nd, conditional 3rd
