Thankfully he hasn't really played with the same bite since that playoff series vs. the Canucks, so this probably doesn't end up being a big deal. Though I'm sure he'll have some extra jump on his trips to the dome this year.

I guess?
202 hits last year, 6-0 fight record. His consistency is obviously the knock on his game, but he doesn't disappear physically when his scoring dries up, despite what people like to suggest.
He'll always be one of my favourite players, tough to see him in Vancouver.

it's 2 back to back screw ups though which are, combined, costing the flames $7.25M in aav this year. That's pretty ridiculous.
How ridiculous was it that Treliving built the first Flames team to finish 1st in their division in 12 years and finish 1st in their conference in 30 years? He's not perfect but I'm having a hard time being overly critical of him at this stage.

In fairness I didn't watch him a ton I suppose. I just remember it being hard to miss noticing him in that series, he was a monster. Of course it'd be next to impossible to keep that up on a regular basis. Probably being too hard on him as the alternative is admitting the stupid Canucks improved their roster today :P

I'm a big fan of Treliving but that doesn't mean I have to love and be on board with everything he's done.
He's had 2 major UFA whiffs that are costing the flames $7.5M in cap space this year, which could have been used to improve a good team that he's the architect of. I'm sure he's just as frustrated by this as any fan.

So glad he didn't come here. Too inconsistent and injuries. I would have been able to stomach it for way less term.. Finally, some posters can move on from the Ferland era.

He doesn’t deserve an unwavering pass for that. Neal and Brouwer ended up being significant screw ups that are hamstringing the team now, and he should be held accountable for that.
Winning the division gets erased by how hard the Flames got exposed in the playoffs. There are some very troubling holes on this team and I don’t expect them to finish that high next year, now that the book is out and other teams around them have gotten better. Treliving is unable to address those holes effectively in part because of his past mistakes.
If this ends up being another mediocre season and early summer for the Flames I think it’s fair to question the lack of activity and inability to close out moves, and perhaps call into question the direction this team has taken. Mediocrity should never be acceptable or above reproach.

I dont blame him for those though
Both were widely praised at the time, and it's not like something has come out post signing the flames should have saw

Hockey is a business of results, not intentions. It’s $7 million of wasted money that is preventing the team from getting better and he should be held responsible for that, regardless of what the sentiment was at the time. That is the cross one bears as being the GM of a pro sports team.
That's a sweet contract for Ferland. Thought for sure he would get >4.5. He's still young and has improved every season he's been in the league. Sucks he's going to the Canucks, but whatever. There are other teams in the Pacific I'm more worried about.
There's few players in the league that I cheer for to get huge contracts, but I'm glad Ferland got one. One of the good guys in the game. Fans there are going to love him.

My understanding is that #Canucks were the only team willing to give Michael Ferland 4 years. Other teams were involved but on 3-year deals. His NMC turns into a modified NTC for 3rd year of deal so he does not require expansion draft protection.
So that's Myers and Ferland who are available to be selected in the expansion draft. I doubt Myers would be, because that contract is bad, but if Ferland does manage to stay healthy, this might end up being a good pickup for Seattle.
Also, just checked - the Canucks have $6.8M in cap space, and two RFAs (Boeser and Goldobin). They also have too many bodies on NHL deals.

Last I checked Neal is currently heading into year 2 of a 5 year contract.. people need to chill out a bit.. hold him responsible?? How do we do that? Fire him? Demote him? You know he also did one of the biggest wins of a trade with the Lindholm/Hanifin for Ferland/Hamilton/Fox trade but even then after the Flames fell up short and the canes surprised and went to the conference finals some here freaked out and started trying to paint that trade as a mistake as well.
You can’t be perfect all the time and it’s act quite a bit harder to manage a NHL roster than a lot of us armchair GM’s would like to think it is; Tre has admittedly missed on 3 free agent signings (Raymond, Brouwer, Neal) but he also signed Frolik to a great contract and has made some great trades for this club; plus his drafting has been on point so far. Still 2 months of off-season left and lots to do still!
