Why not both? Aho had no motivation to rush into a deal with Carolina and we don't know where negotiations were at. Also spreading a rumour they wouldn't match a max bonuses contract wasn't challenging and wouldn't have any impact on their contract negotiation with Aho if an offer sheet never came around.

Perhaps it was as simple as Aho's agent that was trying to negotiate high bonuses and was told by Carolina they wouldn't consider giving Aho a contract that included bonuses so they told that to Montreal.

Carolina got the worse possible term in their eyes. Along with no discount on the AAV for conceding the term to Aho’s liking.

This was not a contract they liked.

Aho gave up a UFA year. That wasn't the point. Hopefully I've clarified what I meant above.

Eric Staal is likely the last time the Canes' pulled it off.

Why? $8.42M isn't the worst number considering rumours were Carolina was at $7.5M and Aho wanted at $9.5M. Montreal could have pushed above $9M AAV to add other pressure into them not matching.

Maybe they should have leaked that they wouldn't match a 7 year deal then.

Default Hurricanes to match Aho offer sheet (5 years x $8.454 million)

Yes. And Sebastian Aho is the best player the Hurricanes have drafted since Eric Staal. I am sure they will do whatever it takes to ensure they are well positioned to extend him as a UFA. If they are competitive—which also seems like a decent bet—I don't see why Aho would be anxious to sign elsewhere.

Again, it is a completely baseless supposition on your part.

Lol, always trying to shut down every conversation.

"Completely baseless". Do you read your own ####?

Free agency happens.everynyear and every year long tenured guys change teams for a new environment or better pay.

Why are you so desperate to shut down legitimate concerns. The flames.qre having this exact same issue right now and it's something you've been praising for the last year since hanifin and lindholm signed 7 year instead of 5 year deals.

Say it with me:. TEAM CONTROL

The only person offbase here is you suggesting there is no risk in losing a player to free agency. Think of how stupid that sounds. It literally happens every year. And now that risk for Carolina is in 5 years instead of 8.

God. Why do you even bother responding if you are not going to read what was written?

I never said that there is no risk of losing a player in free agency. I have consistently countered the assertion that Carolina is unlikely to extend Aho in five years. At this point it is neither likely nor unlikely.

Why? Aho didn’t want a 7 year term.

Carolina was at $7.5M on an 8 year term.

Aho wanted 9.5M on a 5 year term. To extent that Carolina would go short term, they would have wanted to go quite a bit less, likely about $6M.

That’s a huge difference.

Just a minor correction, but Lindholm and Hanifin signed 6 year deals.

You're not reading what I've written and are too fixated on what Carolina wanted and what Aho wanted. Those two things are never where the final deal lands.

My comments have only been about potential espionage manipulation of the position of a team offering an offer sheet.

Where'd I put the Advil?

I just thought of this question and apologies if its been asked; when a team matches an offer sheet does it have to be in the exact same structure as the offer sheet presented?
So in this scenario can Carolina just make it so the salary equals the same per year but not have it so much up front?
Hopefully im making sense here.

They have to match the exact terms and structure of the offer sheet.

Can’t we all just be friends?

It comes as no surprise that the Hurricanes matched. This was easily matchable. Could this have just been by the Habs brass to show their fans they tried, without actually believing they would get the guy?
