Was a fan of his for a long time. Sad to see him go but happy he cashed in on a deal with term. Plus I don’t mind the Caps so it works out.

Small timid team became smaller and more passive.

Some sort of experiment going on in Calgary to see if a team can win with minimal physical contact.

I guess I'll be in the minority here and say that I won't really miss Hathaway a lot. Had a better year last year, but I think of him as the definition of replacement level player. You don't sign guys like that, you develop them internally. We just have to find someone else in the organization to play 4th line minutes and kill penalties. I'm sure it will happen.

Lots of wailing about the team getting softer, but Hathaway didn't play a lot of minutes, so his physical impact was fairly minimal. What you ideally want is your top ice-time players having that edge. That's where some work needs to be done.

Or just roll them on 3 different lines. Never ending grind.

Hathaway had 200 hits in his limited minutes. Is Bennett going to play his playoff style game for 82 games?

Is there anyone else in the Flames org that plays Hathaway style?

RIP DAG Line and the days of “Hatha-win”.

This will remain one of the top-5 gifs in CP history though:

Exactly what they did with Hathaway. Now the question is whether the organization has built a steady enough pipeline of prospects who can take his place. They have certainly done that on defense now.

Stone and Hamonic are pretty physical too, and I really hope Ferland comes back and can contribute in that department as well

Winnipeg allowed their hit leader (Tanev) to leave. Who will make up for that ricardodw?

Wouldn't be surprised if Treliving is working on a Ferland deal now that he hasn't signed early. I suspect they want more stability down the middle and see the need to spilt Lindholm and Monahan and know Ferland can play with our top six guys.

Brad knows better than to pay high dollars and long term to Ferland, but if that comes down?

I could see a 3 to 4 year deal similar to what we have Hudler when we signed him as a UFA 4x4 or 4x3.75 which has potential to be either a great value signing or a risk depending on how Ferland continues physically going forward. I think he still has plenty of game left in him and would prefer a 3 year deal but if it had to be 4 years I’d still do it.

Still drives me crazy that Hathaway got away for the paltry amount of 1.5 M a year. To those that are acting like 4 years is too much term, give your head a shake, its 1.5 M. His hits, sandpaper, willingness to go to the net to stir shiz up and ratlike ability of drawing penalties was worth the 1.5 alone, especially on this team which is really REALLY lacking these abilities.

Nevermind the fact that he actually does have some speed, good defensive play and can put up some offense.

Hath was also one of the few guys who brought it every shift in the playoffs and didn't allow Colorado to get him off his game.

IMO this is a much bigger loss for this team than people are grasping.

I agree. Look at the Islanders. When a fourth line clicks, keep it together. That said, maybe he wanted to be closer to home.

Treliving said they couldn’t make the $’s work for Hathaway. Obviously at $1.5 they couldn’t be that far apart but its entirely possible he wanted more to stay here.
