Correct.
If the canes match they own his rights and he plays under the terms of the offersheet he signed.
Further to that, he can't be traded for a year following the match, which means Carolina will have to pay out almost 50% of the contract in that first year. That will make them extremely hesitant to entertain moving him anywhere after that first year

Correct. Aho has no say. The moment he signed the deal with the Habs, he gave first right of refusal to the Hurricanes. If the Hurricanes match the contract terms, then he has to sign the same deal with them.

They probably would have got there, but in no way would they have structured a deal that pays him 21 million dollars in the next 365 days. Massive difference.

Good point, it was a direct attack on Dundun

Look at it this way,
Yesterday Aho signed his next NHL contract, now it just has to be decided between the Habs and Canes who he plays for.

Yup.
Bergevin was banking on Dundon being unwilling to pony up all that money right away for whatever reasoning he believes is an issue. (Defunct football league and lower revenue from the Canes...whatever)
It was a silly offer all the same though because there is not an ownership group in the league that doesnt have that kind ability at the snap of their fingers.

Hurricanes will match "within the timeframe allowed by the League's Collective Bargaining Agreement": https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/...ho/c-308167146
In other words, it might take a few days for the paperwork to get filed with the league.

Gerry Johansson is the real winner here. Took advantage of another GM selling false hope to get your player the deal he actually wanted with next to no negotiation.

This is much better for Aho.
With taxes and the market pressure, it's a miracle if the Habs can sign anyone.

You'll need to change the Canadian amount received and taxes paid by reflecting that he gets paid in US dollars. It shouldn't change the net difference though in US dollars.

This is just US dollars, it's just doing a tax rate comparison.

Absolutely. Aho got a 5 year deal at essentially the money that Carolina would have wanted to pay for an 8 year deal. Plus he gets his money fast.
Carolina may have matched, but the contract they got wasn't anything like what they wanted.

The Habs should really be doing this to their division rivals. If they can't have Point/Marner, then their division rivals should be paying a heavy bonus riddled contract.
They actually offered Aho one year too much. If I'm a GM and making offer sheets, I'm making offers that get players to UFA status sooner.

If the Habs really want Aho, they should be on the phone with Waddell offering to sweeten the compensation. That is the big problem for the Canes as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd just not enough.

It basically made news and pretty much helped set the RFA market. But did nothing for his team.
Back when the Flyers gave Webber that 14 year contract with a huge chunk paid up front to try and force the Predators to take the compensation, not only did they match...but they also traded him after paying a huge amount of the front loaded dollars. Yesterday the Predators signed one of the more coveted free agents. If anything matching that offer sheet galvanized the franchise and ultimately made it more valuable.
Much ado about nothing. If I'm Carolina I take all 7 days to match because I can, and they can trade Aho for a monster return in 3 years too if they like.

So at the end of the day, Habs get nothing while missing out on signing any UFAs. What a dumb offer. If Habs were serious about getting Aho, they should have just ponied up another couple of million and that 1st round pick. They've been looking for a top line centre since forever it seems. Who was their last good one? Saku Koivu?

I agree. I don't think Montreal got creative enough here. All they've done is force a billionaire to pay out 11.3 of 42.27 million up front.
If you're gonna swing, swing for the fences.
