Toby Reider was expecting to play with McSnuggles and/or Draistal and look what happened to him. Got blamed for the team missing the playoffs. I wouldn't touch that tirefire with a twenty foot pole let alone a ten foot one.

Just like the Reiders and Ratties of days past lore.

Im not saying it is a good idea or a bad idea, but I can certainly understand guys, along with their agents, talking in terms of " Holland says if we sign there for a couple seasons at XX $$, you get to play with McDavid and really raise your profile for a bigger payday down the line".

Lots of guys would be open to that idea IMO, particularly guys that know they can play but were in spots that didnt allow them to thrive.

Its not a new concept or anything. Players are always looking to places where they will get better opportunities.

I feel bad for Darling. Never good seeing people struggle with alcoholism and losing hold of their goals.

Oilers clearing up cap space to sign Phaneuf I'd bet. Come home, Dion!

I think almost every fan knew that Darling contract was terrible from day 1.

It's funny how completely blinded GMs can be sometimes and they can't see what is obvious to practically everyone else.

I also love the idea of "saving cap space" with a buyout. You only have to waste a few million in cap space to save a few million. It reminds me of my sister's shopping habits when she buys stuff on sale that she doesn't need and brags about how much money she saved.

It wasn't that obvious to me.

Seems to be pretty common for teams to sign backups who have had success to be their next starter. Obviously his contract looks bad now but he would have turned UFA and likely many suitors. Career save percentage above .920 when he signed the deal. Were his personal problems well known at the time?

Couldn't agree more on your buyout point. Buying out Brouwer for the Flames made a bad decision worse IMO.

Darling was an alcoholic when he signed with Chicago and was very overweight. Chicago cleaned him up and he became a very good backup to Crawford.

Once he got traded and signed the long term contract, he (presumably) fell off the wagon, as he's been terrible ever since.

So, he was an extreme risk to be certain, but I have little doubt that if he had remained clean, he would have been a very good goalie.

I have heard nothing in terms of him "falling off the wagon", but without question he lost all confidence in his abilities.

Scott lost his father to an accidental drowning about a month ago.

He needs to step away for a bit and get refocused because he can be a really good G, but not at this point. Maybe its already to late for him, I don't know, but I wouldn't be to surprised to see him back next season as he has knocked down every obstacle he's faced thus far in his life.

I'm cheering for him.

I think the risk was always so high that it was likely to backfire. A career minor leaguer in his late 20s and 75 NHL games coming out of nowhere.

He was granted a leave of absence for personal reasons in February. I think it was just speculation it might have been alcohol related.

He's come along way from his earlier troubles, let's hope that whatever his issues are, he can overcome them.

Very likely Broberg is already being gifted a starting spot on the main roster. Nobody rushes shiny first round picks into the lineup like the Oilers.

I would imagine the Oilers have Bouchard pencilled in ahead of Broberg.

Not even remotely true. They are trying to line up a junior club for him.

Of course they are. Will need a team to send him down to after 45 games or so.
