Friedman says the Flames want Tkachuk and Tkachuk wants to be a Flame. It is not the same situation that is happening right now between Marner and Toronto.

Man I know it won’t happen but I’d love Marner on this team and part of the core, he’s obviously keying in on what the other big two players got and can you really blame him? The Leafs have done this to themselves and did themselves no favours when they buckeled in the 11th hour with Nylander.

I believe I've read that Tkachuk wants a 5 year deal, which takes him to UFA.
Now that doesn't mean that he wants to leave Calgary ASAP, it just means he wants to maximize his salary by hitting UFA as soon as possible at an age that is advantageous to him. That comes as no surprise and you can't blame him, or any other player for that matter, for that.

Gaudreau and Monahan.
I like Marner, but I'm not sold at all on Nylander as a guy you want at the top of your lineup. He's soft and takes too many nights off.
with Johnny, he's small, he'll get dominated at times, but you can't question his desire.

I think if Nylander could be had relatively cheaply in a trade we should take that risk. I think hed thrive as the 3rd largest threat opposite Johnny-Monahan while we can let Lindholm try and cement himself at centre. Marner is just going to be too expensive.

I have zero doubt that Tkachuk would like and asked for a 5 year deal at most. Preferably 4, but that isnt happening.
That would maximize his UFA value, and there is no reason he wouldn't want that.
I still see this as a 6 year deal max, but the money will be harder to figure. No way anything is done til at least a few days after the 1st of July, and seeing if any offer sheets are tabled. If the rumblings are true about Marner, then I suspect MT comes in north of 9...maybe 10. Would be nice to get him at 8.5 but it just feels like that ship has sailed.

I wonder if we don't see a 2 year, 6.75M AAV bridge deal. Then an 8 year deal after that and also a "passing of the torch" situation between Giordano and Tkachuk, with Tkachuk signing the biggest deal in Flames history and becoming the new Captain.

Entirely possible IMO, but i dont think it happens until one of the dominoes falls.
Every one of the high end RFA's are likely to wait until they see what happens with Marner, unless one is blown away by their existing team.
If Marner does sign the speculated OS at the numbers being thrown around, all bets are off.

He didn't say anything about Marner wanting to be a Leaf. Friedman was insinuating that Tkachuk isn't talking to a lot of teams trying to get an offer sheet.
