That's what Pat Steinberg was saying on the radio today, and the 960 guys are reasonably connected.

Well I'm good with this-I still think he's a good goalie, and he's got something to prove. With all of the shinier possibilities well out of our price range, this is pretty much ideal.

Wonder how many years they’re offering Rittich?

I would guess at least three. He's earned it after a couple of one year "show me" deals. I think he'd want some security.

I would guess they are negotiating off of DeSmith’s contract. Three years.

DeSmith is a backup on a great' almost inexplicable, contract. He must really like Pittsburgh. $1.25 million/year for 3 years isn't going to get Rittich to sign, especially after the GM says he expects him to be the starter.
I expect something like $3 million per for 2 years.

Oh, he'll be compensated handsomely. Not outrageously so though, as he's not established. A three year deal pushes him to 29, where if the moon and stars align he can make major bank.

It will be more than a $1.25 m cap hit, but I doubt it gets as high as $3.0 m. DeSmith didn’t get the same number of games, but he is presently the closest comparable in terms of age, experience, and averages.

I think it's a good bet that the Flames' goaltending comes in at around $4 million total next year. That'd be a steal.

If it does, that combined salary would be lower than what the Oilers are paying Miko Koskinen lol.

There is just no way Rittich signs for low end back up money, especially if it’s for 3 years as you suggest. Why would he do that? DeSmith makes the same as Laurent Brossoit for crying out loud.
Congrats to the Pens for signing a goalie cheap during the year. If Rittich was would have taken anything close to that he’d be signed already.

All this negative talk on Gillies is ridiculous, he lost some development time due to surgery and had a bad season last year(as did all goalies in Stockton) but his raw talent shouldn't be ignored, he's 6 months younger than Binnington FFS
FYI, the best goalie in Flames history was 27 years old when he started his first game here

It’s just an incredible situation. Every time I see Koskinens name I laugh out loud and think “I can’t believe they are paying him $3.5 mil!” Then I laugh even harder when I remember it’s $4.5.

Hell, they're not done yet. It could end up more than they end up paying the backup

Did they change the rules and teams/players can now talk term and money?
I mean, it was assumed they always did but had to keep quiet about it during the courting period. But now money/term get leaked all the time.

Being a goalie is such a tough go. Only 2 NHL spots, it's the easiest position for everyone to be critical of and, typically, it takes years to establish yourself and get an opportunity for the big contract.
