Seems like another Eddie Lack situation. We don’t know which version of a goalie we will get with Talbot. I am pretty sure it will be around 1 year 1.5M. Anything higher than that will make it that much more difficult to fix by waivers or sending him to the minors. I think it has more to do with cap space than anything else. Here is to Talbot having a great year with the Flames, though I will not be putting any money on it.

What did you expect to see? He is a 21-year-old coming off of an injury plagued second professional season. Parsons is a good two years away from the NHL.

The two situations are nowhere close. Eddie Lack never established himself as a starter whereas Talbot had played more games between 2016–18 than nearly all other NHL goalies.
Talbot will cost a good deal more than $1.5 m, and he won't be spending any time in the minors.

If that’s the case then it’s a very high risk for someone after a terrible year. Can he turn it around? Sure, but he is also 31 already. I just don’t see the Flames as a team that revamps goalie careers. As Button said, they don’t quite have a goalie whisperer(he said it about drafting goalies though).

Talbot is a risky move.
I would rather have a more established goaltender that has had recent success.

Not enough cap space for that. A reclamation project is really the only option at this point. If I was betting on a goalie to rebound, it’d be Talbot.

It all depends on how much value is placed on the position. There are options on how to divide cap space.

Not that many options though. Tkachuk is gonna eat up a lot of those dollars. I guess there’s the option of letting him walk. I don’t like that option though. Talbot is risky, but also could pay off. Rittich may be ready to take the ball and run with it too.

Meh. I have no real strong feelings on this. Pretty sure the Flames are hoping Rittich can carry the old next year. If they think we can get 30-35 games out of Talbot and have him not be a dumpster fire the entire time I think it’s worth the gamble.

Talbot NHL sv% season by season:
. 941 (NYR)
.926
. 917 (EDM)
. 919
. 908
.892 (EDM) / .881 (PHI)
Bit of a trend there...

Yup, he's played for a crappier team annually.

What other options do they have?? It's easy to say "just sign Mrazek" or "pay what it takes to get Bobrovsky" but those guys likely don't want to come to Calgary. Varlamov might be an ok option but I can honestly see him going downhill really quickly.
Trade wise, I don't even know who would be available but we do know that Treliving was inteirested in Talbot before he went to the oil.
It just sucks that going into another season we know that goal tending is the team's biggest concern yet again.

And was so bad after that he lost his spot to Koskinin who is terrible in his own right.

While the goaltending hasn't improved, I feel like the playoffs have helpfully provided us with bigger concerns than goaltending lol

Sounds like Talbot is doing his best to put his demons behind him.

so you're saying his play only fell off a cliff because of substance abuse.

Well it's to be expected when you play for the Oilers.
Edmonton Oilers: Not even once.

Anthony Stolarz is a UFA now and may be a cheaper target. Since they were traded for each other, it shows they have comparable league-wide value.
