Ouch, those two 2nd rounders at 34th Mason McDonald and 54th Hunter Smith really sting.

No kidding. Especially when we could have packaged the picks up like NYI did and picked someone who would be a player. Lemieux was the talk IIRC.

At least it looks like the Flames learned from that draft.

They haven't drafted for size much since then. The big guys they have picked, Falkovsky and Bruce, were both 7th round picks. And in terms of goaltending picks, it looks like maybe they value stats rather than just pure athleticism now.

And if you want to be happy, just look at the 2011, 2015 and 2016 drafts.
Button seems to be slowly improving.

For the 2011 draft, 4/5 are NHLers and all 5 have played. For the 2015 draft, 3/5 are NHLers so far. And for the 2016 draft, Tkachuk is great. Dube looks promising. Fox was used as a valuable piece in a trade. Most of the other picks are still pretty decent prospects.

No, the 4th rounder was traded for Fantenberg.

Fourth rounder is gone as a result of the Fantenberg deal.

You thought that the Flames would pick William Nylander with the #4 pick? Ahead of both Leon Draisaitl and Sam Bennett?

Add in that Tampa Bay themselves drafted Dom Masin and Jonathan Macleod ahead of Point.
Every team passed on him.

I seem to recall that Draisaitl was considered to be clearly in the second group of players in 2014 behind Ekblad and the Sams. Some of the draft rankings had Nylander ahead of Draisaitl.

At the time, because everyone assumed the top 3 would be Ekblad, Reinhart, and Bennett in some order, there was a lot of debate over who the Flames should take in 4th and Draisaitl definitely wasn't the unanimous choice.

Not OP, also not sure how he would be picked ahead of Draisaitl at #3, but Nylander was highly touted, especially pre-2014 season, where he was considered the top prospect by many going into the season. I think the "Big 4" differentiate themselves enough that pre-draft most people agreed that the Flames would get the leftover but it's not that huge of a stretch for Nylander to be considered at the time.

I could also see maybe him getting confused with the 2016 draft where Alexander Nylander was expected to go in that 6th-8th spot by most.

Nah, I don't think he was clearly behind the Sams. It was a pretty consensus top 4 by the time of the draft. There was speculation the Flames wanted to move up to #2 to pick Draisaitl even.

Just one of many talking about the "big four" prior to the draft. Of course surprises happen and teams go "off-the-board" but the big four was pretty established by the draft.

I remember being perfectly happy for either Bennett or Drysaddle. Also recall making some arguments that Willy was good choice too.

There was a clear top 4, then there was DalColle and Nylander in the 2nd grouping.

Yeah, the top four was always cast in stone, and most people had the Sams 3 and 4. Bennett had been ranked higher but not by the time of the draft. Nylander was never ahead in any list I saw.

ETA: here's a few lists. A couple have Nylander ahead but that's more about Draisaitl being ranked way lower (and the list usually being a longer time in advance):

Yeah, CP's draft poll had a combination of the five. Ekblad, Reinhart, Bennett, Draisaitl and Dal Colle.

Amazing that DalColle is the one who's flubbered out of that top 6. 32 gp and 7 points to show. And some think Benny's a bust.

McKeens and maybe Mackenzie had him first overall in the 2014 pre-season (i.e. a full season before the draft). He fell throughout the year (or the others rose, depends how you want to look at it) but was sort of in that third tier by the end
