Tyler Parsons has a long way to go before he's pushing anyone at the NHL level.

Hard pass on Allen.

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who had a rougher regular season than Mike Smith, but Allen and Schneider would probably be up there.

Between what we’ve had to endure with Smith, Elliott, and Hiller I would love to stop watching catastrophic meltdowns in net.

Please pony up for a real goaltender and stop the annual dumpster diving. I know it’s easier said than done but this is what Treliving is paid to do.

I wonder if he might have to go through another team to do that as what you say about teams with cap space aren't necessarily going to be looking at an asset with only 1 year.

For example, would the Kings take Brodie and Frolik in exchange for Quick? The Kings might want to move on from the veteran goalie and the Flames could use him. While the Kings won't have any use for Brodie and Frolik this season, they could give them lots of ice time and parlay them into a big haul at the deadline.

In this type of scenario, the Flames move the cap hit to an area of need (goaltending), get cap space to sign their RFAs, while the Kings move a veteran goalie with term that might be hard to move at the deadline, in exchange for two pieces that will be very easy to move.
The thing about adding quick though is, at least in my estimation, it seriously limits your flexibility to sign Andersson/valimaki once their deals come due.

The timeframe for this flames team is 2-3 years imo, so cap hits that extend past that are likely to be disruptive to the Transition. Having the wideman boat anchor seriously hurt Calgary's teansition, and Neal is already doing that. Can't risk another one imo.

If you add quick you're pretty much hoping Rittich doesn't grab the mantel because then how do you rid yourself of the quick contract?

I don't mind the Jake Allen idea. If at louis is thinking the term for edmunson is too long for their liking I could see a Brodie for allen deal with the blues shipping out edmunson separately.

Jake Allen's term and role fit the flames better than quick does imo. Saves Calgary about 350k this year.

He became the backup on a Flames team that played in Game #7 of the Stanley Cup Final. I would be okay with that outcome.

*EDIT* Wait! I forgot about that last time....

This is typically what happens when humans are exposed to traumatic events. Their brain blacks it out as a defence mechanism.

Would Thomas Greiss be an option?

Lehner is a pending UFA but all signs points to him going back to the Island. Do they want to pay Greiss 3.33 to be a back up? No idea what the framework of a deal would be.

Would still think that a Neal for Quick deal makes sense for both teams.
Same age, same salaries.
Quick would not have to play as many games which would help with health issues.
Kings have two young goaltenders that they can play.
Kings play a slower bigger style which may suit Neals game better.

Greiss would be a great add, but the problem with dealing with NYI right now is likely that they're tied up with UFA negotiating etc and until they settle all that a deal couldn't be struck meaning other options could pass you by in the meantime.

If you sent Gillies and a draft pick/prospect, would that be enough? They wouldn't have any goalies until Lehner is signed, and I don't think any of their prospects are close to NHL ready at the moment. They only have mediocre AHLer Chris Gibson in the system as Soderstrom has lost 2 seasons to injury.

I think they might take Gillies back to help fill out their depth, but even with additional prospects/picks it might not be enough. Good idea though.

St Louis is a perfect example of the difference a good goalie makes. With Allen, they were an also-ran. With Binnington, they are the cup champs.

Allen will NEVER take you to the next level. So, for a team looking to get to the next level, Allen is a complete waste of resources.

I would rather just see what Gillies/Parsons can do, rather than grab a guy like Allen (not that I am suggesting that running with Gillies is the answer).

Yet with Allen as their backup they won the cup.

I think if the Flames do something like that its with the idea that Rittich would get the majority of the starts with Allen assuming the 1B role of 35+ starts.

So in a roundabout way the Flames hope Rittich is our Binnington.

Then, Allen is off the books in 2 years when they possibly have one of the kids ready to start.

So I'm clear, I'm not advocating the move. I just could see it happening.

Hoping Rittich becomes your Binnington has absolutely nothing to do with Allen being the backup. Allen did nothing for them down the stretch or in the playoffs, so suggesting he had anything to do with their success holds no water.

Wasting precious resources (cap space) on a guy like Allen (who you just want to be a backup anyway), is pointless. And counter-productive.

2 years of Allen is much more palatable than a 32 year old Neal with 4 years left after an abysmal season.

Rittich is our only NHL capable goalie over the next 2 years unless we get someone new or the Russian or Gillies progress.

Parsons is more than a couple years out in all likelihood.

In other words the risk is minimal if it means losing Neal's hit.

I could have been their backup in the playoffs and they still would have won the Cup. Binnington played all but 24:28 of the Blues' playoff games.

I was employing some Flash Walken-esque sarcasm.

But the rest makes sense if Treliving was indeed talking to Armstrong about Allen.

Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
My hunch is that Cam Talbot is the free-agent goalie who winds up with #Flames ...

I would be ok with this.

With Allen in net the Blues don't even get past Winnipeg. Stay away Brad.
