good player at a good salary and term...wanted the flames to make a play, but looks like he will be off the market.

So after these 2 signings, and getting rid of Marleau money, are the leafs still in cap hell? Have to think Gardiner is all but gone. Do they need to shed more salary?

With today's movements the Maple Leafs have between $7.14–$7.6 m of cap space, and with 18 players on the roster, five defensemen, and Mitch Marner still to sign.

They remain in serious trouble.

Have to think Nylander will be traded then.

This figure does not include Nathan Horton's $5.3 million LTIR'ed salary.

Right. I hadn't noticed that. Even then, Toronto still has at best only about $2.0 m of wiggle room with which to fill out their roster. They have to clear more out.

They have a backup goalie signed for $750000 that they don't want to keep.

The team is in rough shape. No first round pick.

Muzzin gone at year end and they won't be able to replace him. Terrible defensive depth as it stands now where they need to add a top-4. And their bottom pairing looks like garbage.

And losing those first round picks will slowly, but surely catch up with them because it negates their ability to add entry level contracts to help out their cap situation.

Dubas is hot garbage

So that buys all, and only, RFA years?
You'd think they'd want shorter or longer than 4 years.

Prior to this year haven't the Flames been trading their 1st round picks every year?

Also the Leafs bottom pairing will be great. Especially if the get Lilly and Sandin up.

Rosen will be playing for the big club next year too.

Unfortunately contact negotiations involve two sides.

I'm sure this was the best deal Dubas could get.

I doubt Kappy was offering more years at similar term and Dubai just said No Thanks.

No? Last first rounders was 2017 Valimaki. 2016 Matthew Tkachuk. 2014 Sam Bennett. 2013 Sean Monahan.

Could anyone else besides the Oilers GM screw up a cap situation so badly?

the more i think about it the more i think the agents didn't do their job...

an anoymous GM in the Mirtle article on the Athletic said he thought these two would get offered sheeted, with a dollar value going up to 4.227 AAV (the 2nd round pick compensation ceiling)

so, Johnsson and Mirtle are losing 2 million dollars to stay in toronto... these guys aren't superstars (yet). 2 million dollars compared to what they have earned in the NHL so far and what these contracts are respectively is a lot of money.

if the agents were smart, they tell them to wait until july 1st just to see what is available for them out there
