UPD: Salary cap set to $81.5 million and floor set at $60.2 million
News UpdateBob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
It’s official now. $81.5M salary cap. Salary floor is $60.2M
Friedman has been saying that the cap might be closer to $82 million than the projected $83 million for some time now, but this is the first I heard it might be less than $82 million
Darren Dreger
@DarrenDreger
NHL and NHLPA meeting today. Among topics, next years cap projection. Some believe the cap will be around $82 mil. A lower cap means lower escrow. Obviously, teams with cap issues were hoping it would be closer to $83 mil. Should be finalized this week.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Multiple teams I’ve spoken to are very concerned about this cap forecast. Many fear that when the NHL and NHLPA settle on an upper limit this week, it will be LESS than $82M for next season, or an increase of only slightly more than $2M.

Flames will be fine. Vegas? Yeah, they'll be fun to watch.

If it goes under $82, that could really effect Treliving's ability to take a player in return for Brodie or Frolik. Might have to just look at picks and prospects for those two.

I hope hes already doing so for frolik. Great player but hes the exact type you hope someone like Bennett mangi or dube can replace outright from within next season.
It does limit what brodie can be exchanged for, and probably increases the value of someone like Kadri a bit. But it will also increase the value of Hamonic at his cap hit for one more year.

Half the league will be in a tough spot. Teams with tons of cap space, like Ottawa and Jersey should be able secure a few picks or prospects out of teams desperate to shed cap.

It's interesting to consider a salary cap contraction.
If this was baseball or wahtever, 1/3 of the league would be near the bottom of the cap and could absorb troublesome contracts from teams at the top end.
But the NHL salary cap doesn't work that way. There aren't many teams in the league below the cap right now and if they are it's generally because they simply can't afford more salary.
Maybe the players shouldn't have pushed through the accelerator every year it was available....

I love the idea of just picks for Brodie and Frolik. This prospect group needs a talent infusion and I think they would be more able to chase a guy like hall mid season with the 2020 draft picks.

This is bang on.
Every contending team had cap issues to some degree, it's the nature of living in a cap world.
Teams are always desperate to shed cap, such that even decent assets (like Brodie/Frolik) are often hard to move without taking back at least some cap space.
Teams that would be generally interested in decent players with one year before UFA are usually teams that have a chance to contend, and they usually don't have the cap space to simply absorb the full amount of the cap space.

There is always a James Neal buyout if we need some extra space.

Looking at this strictly from the Flames perspective, I kind of hope Frolik is held on to for more of a midseason/deadline transaction. I don't see his shoes being readily filled. Whereas there are lots of options on the blueline should Brodie and/or Stone move on.

It's hilarious that "teams with cap issues" includes the '9-10 million left to put a team on the ice' Edmonton Oilers

Good. Hopefully this at least flat-lines contracts for a while as they are starting to escalate out of control as the Skinner one IMO is not good for the NHL.

Could this push Tkachuk closer to a bridge deal? Less money available league wide now, but more likely in 2-3 years time.
They could sign him for whatever, but if he knows he can get even more down the road and the Flames can use additional cap space to make roster adjustments it could be win/win?

At present, 30/31 NHL teams are below the $82 m projected cap. Last year more than half the League iced rosters with +$3 m of cap space without the benefit of LTIR relief.

I wonder how much of this is to control the Cap Floor for the introduction of Seattle?

I think the NHL has needed one of these years where the cap does go up or corrects its self. These contracts that are being signed now are being signed with the assumption that the cap will continue to go up 2-4M each each.
