This is a bad deal but Trouba isn’t that good and is overrated in general.
I liked his refreshingly honest rationale and don’t blame him one bit though. Still, the Jets GM is one I am blown away that he hasn’t been fired yet.

I dont know man....he seems to personify that Franchise. Slow and patient, but competent.
Hes largely silent but when he does get in there he seems to do well.

Anyone re-jigging their expectations of Brodie’s return, yet?

Nope. Think Trouba has a limited market and WPG did the good guy thing and made Troubas wish happen.
Yeah the D man market is saturated but I think Brodie gets a good enough return. Either a signed roster fw in his age group, an RFA from a strapped team or a package of picks.

remember when Cheveldayoff used to sit on his hands instead of making big moves? Maybe he should go back to his old ways.

Nope. Still think the return will be underwhelming, a pick in the 2nd or 3rd round.

If that's the case, we might as well keep him. Although that might require Brad to figure out way to get rid of Neal and Stone

Well he has traded 1st round picks in back to back deadlines so he did try to win a cup while the current window is open. I personally feel his biggest failing is that he needs to recognize that Maurice isn't the guy that's going to win a cup with that team. It sounds like Trouba's intentions are to hit UFA and that may have driven down his price and the Rangers being the #1 destination in the league could probably take the risk.

Exactly. One good year but guy is underwhelming defensively.

Then you stunt the growth of Valimaki, Andersson and Kylington. You also maintain an unneeded salary. Brodie is gone for the best return Treliving can milk out of him.
I doubt Neal gets traded. If he does, its likely the end of any high profile UFAs signing with the Calgary Flames. If having a single bad season sees the team dump you, then who the hell would want to sign here when they have control over where they can play? Think about it. If your employer wooed you to uproot your life and family to come to a new city, promising you a long term commitment and big things, then transfers you somewhere else after a single year, would you recommend that company to anyone? Probably not.
Stone is going to be a tough move. They guy barely played last season and was passed on the depth chart by Fantenberg. If the Flames have to move him, it may be to the minors. Otherwise he eats popcorn in the pressbox. Someone would have to be pretty to take him at his salary.

A young NHL player and a 1st round pick is not a good return for Brodie?

Decent return on a player who thinks he's worth way more than he is. Especially if Pionk continues to grow and considering they could nail the draft pick.
I certainly wouldn't open the vault to pay Trouba long term after 1 good season. The previous 4 seasons he's player were all pretty underwhelming and he doesn't really move the needle at all even at his best last year.

Keeping him is even worse asset management. You'll both lose him for nothing next summer and block Andersson or Kylington from advancing.

Trouba is a much more valuable commodity than Brodie is I think what he's getting at.

It's entirely possible the Jets just made a bad trade.

Players coming to Calgary are likely coming cause we're offering more money than other markets. I doubt trading Neal would have any effect. Neal is likely looking for a fresh start and a new team where he can play top 6 minutes anyway, so it's not like he'd be getting screwed.
Going off your employee example - if you were interested in working at a reputable, major company, would you care if they fired a high-level employee if they performed horribly during their first year on the job? You might take notice but otherwise, just assume it's an isolated incident and trust in the past many years of culture and business.

Given that everyone and their dog knew Trouba wanted out and the Jets were screwed I think they did alright. They need cap space too and this will help.

The key for the jets is avoiding an arbitration hearing where they risk a cap hit they simply can't afford or lose the player immediately to free agency.

Not a great trade but not terrible either. Not a huge Trouba fan but he's still a quality defenseman. Brodie needs to be moved and the return, while I hope it is good is secondary to actually moving him. If he stays he's gone for nothing anyways and he blocks playing time for younger potentially better players.
