Andrew MacDonald on waivers to terminate contract

Today is the first day of the first NHL buyout window for this upcoming season.
 Philadelphia Flyers @NHLFlyers
Per GM Chuck Fletcher: The #Flyers have placed defenseman Andrew MacDonald on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

edit: just noticed the tweet says terminating the contract not buyout.

This is interesting if they are indeed terminating the contract (and this is not the use of wrong terminology in the tweet), they are free and clear of his $5mil cap hit for this season.
Two reasons the contract could be terminated:

 1. Mutual termination. Both the player and the team agree to terminate the contract. This seems odd because MacDonald would be giving up $5.75 million.

 2. Breach of contract. MacDonald did or did not do something the Flyers can use as grounds to terminate the contract.

One of the worst contracts in the league -- I wonder what basis they have for terminating it?

THis is the contract comparable I’m worried about if we give Hamonic something like a 5x5

If this was the case, why the need to be waived?

Waivers are still required to terminate any contract.

Weird. Seems rather redundant.

At any rate i'm guessing that they told him he would not be on the NHL roster next season and he had no desire to back to riding buses in the A.

Now he can sign somewhere else and still get a chance to play, if even for a much much lower salary.

For sure but he has made a lot of money in his career. Dont know if he is married with children etc, but Im guessing other factors played into this as well.

Okay looks like the Flyers just used the wrong terminology.
Looks like it is a buyout.

 Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Andrew MacDonald (PHI) was the only NHL player on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout today.

If they were willing to retain on Gudas and couldn't find any takers for MacDonald, this is probably an indication of what happens to Michael Stone in the next couple of days.

Ya, Stone is worse than Gudas so we can probably expect very little in return. I don't think he is buyout bad though. 50% retained just garner a 3rd or a 4th imo.

The negativity on Stone isn't really warranted. Last season he could have been dealing with the symptoms of blood clots before being diagnosed, and his conditioning when he came back would have been pre-season form.
I think that he is a lock for the bottom pairing this year.

Eric Francis was speculating on the Fan yesterday that the Flames are going to buy him out. Though he also said it was just his own conclusion, not based on anything he's heard from the team.

I'd be flummoxed to see Stone bought out. Can't imagine it'd happen.

He's a 6/7 making 3.5m. It is what it is, a cap inefficiency. He's replaceable easily by Kylington who has upside and is cheaper.
