Spencer Foo signs with KHL Kunlun Red Star. Has chance to play for China in Olympics
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Interesting story: Spencer Foo, who played at AHL Stockton (and four games for the Flames), is going to KHL Kunlun Red Star. With that: a chance to play for China in the 2022 Olympics.

That's a heck of an opportunity and congrats to him, especially if it is to raise the profile of the game and be a bigger fish in a smaller pond (Chinese hockey is still developing and he'd certainly have some great opportunities out of it).

Because he is RFA, Flames can retain his rights by extending a qualifying offer.
Obviously he can't accept it if he has a current KHL deal.

I think it's likely that the Flames advised him that he was no longer in their plans, hence the KHL deal.

Who is going to be the throw in all of CP’s trade proposals?!
We lost Hanowski and now Foo. I’m starting to worry teams aren’t going to trade us their good players.

Foo was ranked 7 in our prospect ranking last summer.

I don’t think people realized he was older than guys like Lazar because he was undrafted and new to the system

Never lived up to the hype. Certainly not the first prospect to, and won't be the last either.

I think his ranking is indicative of how poor Calgary's prospect depth is right now. There are a lot of people on that list who the Flames have moved on from. Good thing we have a first round pick this year.

Looks pretty good in the late-season call up, which I think boosted him in the ratings.

Completely an aside from the thread topic, but I can't seem to find it. What are the rules for who qualifies as a prospect for the ranking, its something like 40 games played in the NHL right?

You'd have to wonder if he regrets signing with the Flames. When he signed, the Flames RW depth was not very good. If he was realistic, he'd hopefully recognize his odds of cracking an NHL roster in his first year was not great anywhere, but the Flames seemed like a good longterm fit. At the time of signing, they didn't have many natural RW forwards or prospects. Heck, he was the 7th ranked prospect and the highest RW prospect in the 2018 ranking. There are not many teams in the NHL were he would walk in as the best RW prospect.
Where I feel a bit bad for him is this past season. He looked decent in his end of season callup in the 2017-2018 season. The Flames ended up trading Ferland, but adding Czarnik, Neal and Lindholm. He really never stood a chance at cracking the lineup this year, especially since he doesn't have the flexibility of playing centre.
There is an element of luck and timing when it comes to these fringe NHL players. Jooris and Foo are very similar players. Heck, you could make the argument that Foo is a slightly better player. Jooris eked out a 200+ game NHL career because he came into a Flames org at the right time.
Don't get me wrong. Players need to earn their NHL opportunities, but if he signed with the likes of Edmonton or Detroit, he'd have had a better shot at a roster spot.

In Edmonton, he would have been the 2nd line RW. But he is from Edmonton, so he knew the price to be paid for that, and Kunlun is clearly preferable...

Sounds like they had a trade lined up for that first too.

Lindholm definitely had a lock on the top-line RW spot, but Neal was a bust, Frolik flipped between 2nd and 4th line RW and Czarnik was often a healthy scratch.
Any of those RW positions could have been open for him to take if he had made a stronger showing in Stockton and make him worthy of a call-up.
I wanted him to do well within the Flames organization, but we certainly didn't have a "wealth" of talented RWs keeping him on the farm.
