They're paying him like a 35 goal scorer because he got 40 this year. I think he's more of a high 20's guy generally, but maybe on Eichel's wing, low 30's? Either way he's not going to be anything of the sort in 6 years.

$9 million for 8 years for a player who has never scored more than 63 points in a season?

That’s madness, and pretty much how your team won’t be competitive for a long time.

I fear the longer it takes to sign Tkachuk, the higher the cost will be. I see a bunch more crazy contracts coming soon (Marner, Rantanen, Laine, etc.).

Happy for Sabres fans. It’s hard to get guys to go there so whatever.

Good. The way I look at it we’re paying him his salary last year + what we were paying Moulson to play in the AHL (which has finally cleared). If we lose him for nothing, the conversation is “how did this happen, why don’t players want to go there, who is going to score any goals?” — he’s a pretty young, dynamic player that has great chemistry with our best center. It’s a no brainer — and nobody is giving the Sabres a discount right now.

It’s not hard to see why Buffalo remains terrible. Just a never ending stream of horrible contracts from that franchise.

I would say this contract will look horrible in a few years, but really it looks horrible now.

Oof, really glad this can’t be used in the Tkachuk negotiations. Still, doesn’t bode well for the trend of top players earning way more than they did even a few years ago.

27 years old isn't old, but it's not very young for an eight year contract at that much money, either.

This is one of the, if not the most undeserved contracts in the history of the NHL.

Career high of 63 points.

63 points gets you 9M per for 8 years?

Buffalo is a joke.

...James Neal’s value just sky rocketed!

Oilers of the East.

Just a brutal contract by one of the worst run teams in the NHL.

Haven't the Sabres already been rebuilding for at least 5 years? I'm just gonna assume this contract will be bad because the Sabres signed it.

To me this is about $2.5 Million and 1 NMC too rich for this player.

Kind of exactly like Edmonton. A location that they have to overpay players to come or stay there long term.
