Another @Raptors win, another broadcast record!
Last night's Game 1 of the #NBAFinals on @Sportsnet reached 7.4M Canadians and captured an average audience of 3.3M viewers, making it the most-watched #NBA game ever in Canada 🏀🇨🇦
Those are astounding numbers...truly.
Sportsnet have to be grinning ear to ear.

I'd like to know the peak numbers, how many were watching the game at some point during it. It's weird, for Canadian sports they always seem to release one or the other, and seem to flip back and forth.
Last record (Milwaukie game 6) they released peak viewers at 6.8mil, now they went back to average. I wouldn't be surprised if north of 7 million watched this game at some point.

When you look at the ratings in that article, they've been dropping for 4 straight years. Maybe the problem isn't people not interested in the Raptors, or a lack of LeBron, maybe it's more boredom with the Warriors.
It's all three of those, but mostly that those ratings numbers ignore Canadian viewership, which is obviously up by a couple million people.

"The Game 1 numbers cannot simply be hand-waved away by invoking Canada. It is simply a fact that the Game 1 overnights were the lowest in the U.S. since 2009, and while the Raptors’ presence provides a major caveat, it does not change that fact."
The canadian viewership is a total of english and french viewers. "The first Finals contest held north of the U.S. border — marked the most-watched NBA game ever in Canada, drawing an average of 3.5 million viewers to Sportsnet and RDS."

Ratings are a weird thing. The NBA is way more popular and valuable as a brand that it was 10 years ago. Given social media and the internet tracking.emgagements etc. I wonder how relevant they even are.
Tomorrow is going to be very interesting. Will the Warriors continue to contain Leonard and will the rest of the team continue to make them pay? Was game 1 on off night for Golden State in a game where they were still close? What adjustments will each side make and who will be the most effective players in the game?
Game 2’s are never pivotal but can gives us an indication on whether the series will remain competitive. Can’t wait!
I'm pretty sure there are more viewers in China than in North America. It's huge over there. They do Chinese New Years promos every year with all the star players.

300 million people play basketball in China, and 150 million follow the NBA on social media. That is insane, and has really exploded in the last ten years. I wonder if we start seeing a serious shift to Chinese NBA players in the next decade as those young players that started with the boom start to get drafted.
Game two is on TSN with Matt Devlin and Jack Armstrong. The game will also be on CTV2 showing the ABC feed which will allow for simultaneous substitution.

Itll be tough. It's been nearly 10 years since Yao Ming retired and there hasn't really been a Chinese player since.
Yi Jianlian had a few years. The NBA is so talented and physical itll be tough to break in. Plus small rosters. There are only 300 jobs.

I preferred the picture on Sportsnet. The picture on abc(shaw 200) looked like it was tuned down. I don't really care about the commentators, I had it quite low so my son could sleep.
That was a very enjoyable game, the only thing unpleasant was it looked during the anthem like some moron at the game was wearing an Oilers jersey. Wrong sport and wrong team, it's even more out of place then wearing an Oilers jersey to Lake Louise.
Oilers fans and Riders fans are the same, Oilers fans wear their ugly orange to a basketball game and the Riders fans wear their ugly green to a Flames game. Same poo just different pile.

Haha. What a scumbag move by CTV. Not surprised in the slightest though.

I did some more research and the current best player in China is
Abudushalamu Abudurexiti
I want to hear NBA announcers say that.
