How Times Have Changed

I was at some customer service training at my workplace last week and a Flames related story came up when we were asked to share examples of great customer service we'd experienced.

A female co-worker who was a huge Flames fan had called in to the post-game show on the radio. This was probably in the early 1980's and she was young - maybe 8 or 9 years old.

She was so excited to be on the radio, had written up her talking points but as soon as she got on, they said "This radio show isn't for kids, especially not for girls" and immediately hung up on her!

The great customer service she remembered is that her dad was rightly furious about what had happened and called both the radio station but also the Flames to complain.

Even though they weren't directly responsible for what had happened, the Flames got her name and address and sent her a gift bag with a bunch of merchandise along with a note to thank her for being a fan.

Anyhow, I thought that was a nice story (at least the second part!) that I wanted to share.

Times certainly have changed... now we just get to listen to drunks ramble on and on. Also, the same guys call in after every game repeating what they heard in the postgame thinking they are super brilliant. It's great.

Does anyone actually listen to Overtime anymore? Kerr is what made it fun to listen to. No offence to Steinberg, but he allows idiots to talk and tries to be constructive in his criticism. Kerr and his level of pissiness was why I used to listen.

The great Billy Powers blasted me in the late 80's on a Flames post game call in show (I think he only did it for a year when the Flames were on 66 CFR?). I was 17 and he roasted me. I have never called in since. It happens.

Back when John Short used to host his show in Edmonton he would dedicate time specifically for kids to call in every so often. Always thought that was a great way to embolden kids to share their thoughts and bring them into the conversation.

The show would be 1000 X better if callers had a limit of once call per month. Every show is the same 5 dudes with terrible takes.

I'd love to know why someone would miss the game but then stay up and call in anyway. Love hearing the sound of their own voice?

I like to listen to the Oilers post game call in show because it's usually after a fantastic soul crushing Oilers loss. That said, I think CHED does it much better from a format perspective. They have 2 on air personalities doing the show with one being a former NHLer (Rob Brown). They take the call and if it's a average to bad call, they typically let the caller go and discuss amongst themselves. If it's a good caller, they will allow for some back and forth before disconnecting. The element of having a former NHLer on the air helps give real legitimacy and perspective compared to someone who went to radio/communications school and watches a lot of hockey.



Having Steinberg run solo trying to maintain long form conversations with people of varying levels of intelligence, intoxication, etc... is painful on most occasions. As noted in previous posts, it worked well with Kerr because he was cantankerous.
