“High Crimes” is an excellent read on the over-commercialization of Everest, follows the story of one climber and his less than stellar guides and some of the stuff they did (stealing O2 stashes, equipment, making elaborate claims, etc.)

A little bit late but for those of you who are interested, www.alanarnette.com/blog/ carries some pretty good updates from all the teams on Everest.
Explorersweb.com which is great for following Everest and other >8,000' Himalayan climbs, seems to have disappeared in the last couple of days.

Nonfiction - at least that’s how it was categorized. I don’t know enough about Everest shenanigans to know if any of it is sensationalized.

I have a buddy who went to Chimborazo a couple months ago. Ridiculously cool, pretty safe, and not super busy.

Everest (standard route) is not a real technical climb, it just has the grandeur of being the tallest peak on earth. The over commercialization of Everest is sickening.
K2 is certainly difficult but there are more challenging/technical climbs beyond K2 (Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, Makalu & Kanchenjunga amongst others), it just has greater notoriety being the second most popular eight-thousander next to Everest.
I have always admired climbers like Reinhold Messner, Jerzy Kukuczka & Ueli Steck who have summited the most difficult mountains on earth, often using new routes, and often alpine style without oxygen. Jerzy & Ueli both perished on the climb but left incredible legacies.

Ya, it looks like they have a ladder there. Locke could probably even get to the top, despite the fact helicopters can't make it!

Everest is technically relatively simple to climb. K2 is just flat out a beast.
Death rate on Everest is < 1%, it has a large death total (over 280 now) because so many climbers attempt it. In comparison K2 has a death rate of 25%. Almost 80 people have died on that mountain, barely 300 have successfully summited. Only Annapurna has a higher death rate.

A great long-read article on Everest (Deliverance at 27,000 Feet)
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...st-deaths.html
Warning: While none of the pictures are graphic, there are pictures with dead bodies in them, which might be unnerving to some
It really changed my view on the mountain. I used to think it was only rich people mainly from North America that climb Everest, but this story is about 4 Bengali who tried the climb and it seems like many more "local" people are motivated to climb the mountain than I first thought.

Also, I don't understand many people's comments that "thousands have done this before, why is it so special?" I wonder if those people would say the same thing about the Stanley Cup: "hundreds (thousands?) of players have already won the Stanley Cup - why are you trying to hard to win it?"

Do some of the players die if they don't win the cup? and do the fans leave all their garbage in the dome when they leave?
Also 1000s of people have already done it. Not that special.
