I'll take superstore any day of the week over Costco. At least superstore staff don't make you feel like a criminal every time you interact with them.

Yup, the Walton family has a combined wealth of almost $175 billion, and they only own a little over half of Walmart. They're no struggling mom & pop store.

Do you have any examples of that? I have never experienced it. Are you referring to them checking your receipt?

Yes... Plus checking your card at the door, even though you're gonna get checked at the register. Then being asked if it's really you in the picture.
I refuse to go to Costco on principal alone. Screw that place.

What if you're a twin? How would they know if you're really you without asking?

It is kind of odd to show them the card (speculation that maybe they don’t wan t somebody accumulating a whack load of groceries and stuff and then can’t buy it).
But that isn’t really making you into a criminal. That’s pretty much the SOP at any nightclub until you turn 30.
However, if you go and just say you’re there for the cafeteria, they don’t care.

I used to use my dad’s card because the pixels are that bad.

They probably have you show a card so people don't just grab free samples.

Not true, I’ve tried (after I Let my membership expire) and they have stopped me.

I used to shop at Costco, since there’s plenty of things you can find there but not in any other supermarket, but ever since trump has imposed his ridiculous tariffs, I’ve noticed a good number of “exclusive” items have jumped in price, which defeats the purpose of going there for me.
I’ve also found some of their produce tends to hang around too long. Eg. Cara cara oranges.
When they came in fresh, they were great! But when I bought another bag of them months later, I found them dry upon cutting into them.

Tell them you’re using the pharmacy. No restrictions allowed in Canada for access to pharmacist services.

Sure, another service they provide. So shut down Walmart and let those people get different jobs you heathen.

Funny, at the door I have never been asked to take my card out of my wallet, I have it in the middle sleeve under plastic and I just flash it at them, maybe you have that "shifty" look

I bet they ask for the card because they have done studies that people feel exclusive when they get to shop there. I suspect average spend and frequency of return increase the more exclusive they make it feel so they exploit that. Back when they first opened not everyone could get a membership.

3 reasons for asking for your card:
1. This is a membership-driven wholesaler. Asking for your card deters the general public from cruising through, enjoying samples, limit those who are not considering membership, etc
2. To ensure members haven't actually forgotten their card and potentially hold up the tills. Ever been stuck behind someone who didn't have their card at the cashier? Not likely
3. The card checkers also provide a general count to the supervisor managing the front to try and ensure that there are enough tills open to meet demand.

all I want Costco to do is add a 5 items or less express lane.
I hate when I just need 1 or 2 items and can't get out of there quickly.
I'd say about 1/3 of the time I get someone in front of me that sees I have only one item and lets me go ahead.

Ya, an express lane would be a good idea. last time I was there I had a mountain of food, and a shy Japanese lady meekly asked if she could go ahead, with her 1 item.
I, of course, told her to get bent.

I have to laugh at that as more than once I've asked to go ahead and basically been told the same thing.

It’s doubtful that superstore or their employees’ union would corroborate your theory.
