Let this sink in:
If Canada had kept the Spitfire flying from its initial in-service date (1939) for the same length of time that the CF-188 will fly (1982-2028+), the fabric, wood and metal Spitfire would have still been flying 46 years later - 1985 - three years after the Hornet entered service.

It wins categories, but not ones that I would class as critical categories.


Its expensive, its 4th generation, its not really stealthy, its behind the curve in terms of its sensor capabilities, interoperability, and data networking. The one area that I didn't have in there is future path upgradibility where the F-35 and the JAS-39 would be far ahead.


With the advent of longer range missiles, stealth, interoperability a plane with a higher ceiling and speed is probably still going to be behind the curve.


A plan like the F-35 would detect the Typhoon before the Typhoon would pick it up and bring in attacks from different vectors to kill it.


Also there is a greater likely hood of the Typhoon, and the JAS-39 and the Superhornets sensors being made inoperative.


The Typhoon would ultimately be a bad decision, its too expensive for what it offers.

Even just dumbing it down, the Typhoon costs a lot more, and would be outdated a lot sooner. Also we'd need more of them to match the capabilities of the same amount of F-35s.

For Scheer to recognize this fact and state it publicly is pretty impressive. Just hope it's not more than rhetoric - we are very used to seeing this from the Conservatives.

I would hope for the best as procurment is ridiculous, even purchasing pistols is a nightmare.


I have little faith in any parties when it comes to military procurement and any kind of long term strategy.


Harper tried and he did have two decent MND in McKay and Kenney who actually did push forward on heavy lift, and things like the procurement of proper jeeps to replace the Iltis garbage.


But at the end of the day, even Brian Mulrony promised the sky and then delivered pretty much shyte.


At some point, in the next 5 to 10 years our capability is going to be reduced to doing the occasional parade or filling some sandbags while making the choice of which natural disaster is more important.

We had 113's that were older than me when I was overseas in '93.

We basically got f'd over by procurement and paid massive dollars for a crappy jeep so that Bombardier could make money.

God the Iltis was trash.


I remember trying to get it over 70 on the highway.


When you got to a hill you had to boot your passengers out to get to the top in an aggressive rear recon maneuver.


There was no protection, you could push a screw driver through the body.


Oh yeah, and swim? As long as the wheels could touch the bottom and you didn't mind getting wet.


It was just a bad design.
