Accused Calgary killer Nathan Gervais arrested while on the run in Vietnam

Sounds like it was a fluke that he got arrested in Vietnam and it wasnt work by CPS that tracked him down.

Police said he was first apprehended in November 2017 by police in Vietnam.

Global News has learned he was arrested for being in the country with a fraudulent passport. That sparked a deportation order.

Gervais, 22, was deported back to Canada last week.

Calgary police were then invited to Vietnam to help facilitate his deportation back to Canada. He flew first to Japan and then Toronto. Once he was on Canadian soil he was arrested by Peel Regional Police.

Police said his transfer to Calgary was facilitated by Alberta sheriffs.

Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm explained it was the Ministry of Public Security in Vietnam that notified CPS last month Gervais was to be deported. Homicide detectives were invited to assist with that process, and accompany him back to Canada.

CPS also confirmed they will be investigating if anyone helped Gervais leave Canada and evade capture for so long.

“We can’t say that he was aided by someone at this time,” Chisholm said.

Strasser-Hird’s father told Global News he wants charges to be laid against anyone who helped Gervais.

“Whoever helped him is hopefully going to get prosecuted here,” Dale Hird said on Monday. “If they don’t, it’s almost saying it’s OK to help someone do that.”

Hird said none of this would have been an issue had Gervais not been granted bail before the trial.

“The decision to let him out on bail cost 20 months of full-time work for the Calgary police and that’s just ridiculous,” Hird said.

I wonder if his fraudulent passport was a Canadian one, or was it from another country?

If it was a Canadian one, then I hope someone is looking into how he was able to do that and fix that security hole

I'm assuming it must have been Canadian since they reached out to Canadian authorities to arrange his return home.

While Gervais laughed and smirked as Tilleman rendered his verdict, he was less jovial as court adjourned.

He refused to stand up when court was called to order, then stormed from the prisoner’s box to his cell, striking the door to the cell area twice as he was escorted out.

He's actually dumb to travel to a communist place like Vietnam which has more paperwork, police and bureaucracy. I've been to Vietnam once and just at the airport the passport stamping is done by "RCMP" equivalent, not airport security. Plus at hotels and hostels the police get a record everyday of who checked in and checked out. The hotel holds your passport until you leave.

Ya, that's not true. It used to be common in 3rd world countries, back in 2000 I remember doing that lots. But I was in Vietnam and Cambodia last year and never gave it away.

Yeah, most of these countries actually legally demand you carry you passport on you at all times, although it's never enforced and I highly recommend you don't.

And I severely doubt any of those hotels are reporting who is staying where to the police. They keep a log book of it, in case it's ever needed, but they don't check in nightly with the po-po. Could you imagine the paperwork?

I guess they can take a photo copy now but absolutely they have to report to the police. Its communist bureaucracy.

Victim got jumped for telling them not to be racist according to the article.

In 2013, Strasser-Hird was an 18-year-old student, just back from a year in South America. At the Vinyl nightclub, he overheard someone call the bouncer a "dirty spic" and confronted the group of young men, including Gervais, telling them not to be racist.

All tourism accommodation establishments have to register guests’ information every night to the police. This is for them to keep track on the foreigners staying in the country and make sure that their visas haven’t expired. This was the only way until many hotels in big cities were computerized. Many hotels now can submit the guests’ information through internet. Therefore they often borrow your passport for 10 minutes then return it after copying or you just can give them a photocopy of your passport. However, in some remote areas, the cheaper hotels or hostels still ask to keep your passport because the authorities often drop by to check if the hotels have the guests’ passports at the front desk. In case the hotel doesn’t have the guests’ passports or any equivalent records on hand, they will be fine around $250USD.

OK, well that sounds like a massive amount of paperwork. I assume they fax it in, and the fax dumps the paper directly into a box, and the box gets filed for eternity.

Speaking to this, when traveling through some remote parts of China and Vietnam I have been visited at the hotel by police on numerous occasions so I would assume in at least some districts they check it on the regular.
